Facebook Ads - best practices

Hey WF,

I am running my first Facebook Ad campaign (yaaaay). I'm going down the CPM route instead of CPC. The suggested bids for my campaigns are $0.03-$0.035.

So I have 2 questions really:

1) How do you know where to pitch it? Am I going to incur the Wrath of Zuckerberg if I pitch at the lower end of the suggested bids i.e. $0.03?

2) How narrow do you target the audience? My campaigns are targeting < 30,000 profiles based on my search criteria. Is there a sweet spot to aim for?

Come on Facebook dons. Show me some love

Thanks,

Sanj - Facebook Jedi warrior (still learning the ropes)

I personally use cpc and start with $1 bid to get the best ad position the lower my bids as my ctr increases. Your target rate is pretty high and your .03 bid will go by pretty fast since FB likes to take everything you got. I would narrow down your ad to age. For example if your are targeting gamers, so a split test of 3 age groups (18-25, 26-35, 35-55). Run the ads and keep the best one. From there start tweaking your ad (picuture then text). It will take some time. Good luck!

      Thanks for the heads up.

I used Ruck's guide and focused on traffic outside of the US. First campaign I setup was Brazil and instantly received clicks. Insane!

UPDATE - I'm running a campaign to get Likes to my FB fan page. The first ad is targeting UK users but it's quite broad. I may narrow it down however the CTR is 0.11% which is pretty good (according to Ruck's report).

I change ads every 2 or 3 days. It helps (i'm not sure why - maybe people get bored with same ads)

Well it's recommended that you run several ads at the same time and analyze which one converts the best.

      Test, test, test!

I set our ads to CPC and we start at $0.50. My offline business's lowest price point is £40 for a job, so I'm happy to be paying that.
As we get clicks, I change our bid to the highest of the recommended bid range.
I only narrow down the target audience if it makes the estimated CPC go lower. Ours is targeting by people who live in our town and surrounding villages anyway and their age, so we don't really change that a lot anyway.

UPDATE 2 - FB ads definitely work. So far I am up to 12K impressions with a 0.18% CTR. Not outstanding but no bad considering it's my first campaign. I am now ready to test/tweak some ideas.

If you're sitting on the fence then I suggest you give this a go.
