First you need to know the market of these social websites,

for facebook the best selling goods could be some funky t-shirts, or geek stuff, people there are for some fun, they can buy cool stuff, selling them internet marketing stuff would be disaster

IF you go for pinterest there people are looking for some cool images they can place to their boards, there are inclined towards recipes, travel , DIY, jewelry and similar stuff, you will need a lot of images.

If you are looking for establishing yourself as a guide for personal, finance training, job career, entrepreneurship linkedin is best way to go, make a cool profile and join some relevant groups..

So it all depends what you are thinking to sell, You should be looking for something you are true expert, Don't run for money, become expert in something and i really mean something extraordinary, keep on researching in your field and money will run after you

First you need to know the market of these social websites,
That kind of says it all. Research your niche and see where people are most responsive. Use facebook and look at pages and groups checking the activity, use # tags in twitter and see how often people refer to terms similar to your niche.

I would never advise selling straight off the bat either because you'll most likely find people to become more unresponsive if you only intend to sell.

I probably wouldn't look elsewhere other than FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Guest Posting from a social point of view.

A combination of all social media platforms would be the best way. Social media is all about building relationships first rather than trying to sell too much straightaway. But better to start off with one social media platform and then diversify slowly to other. The 80-20 rule applies here as well.

Your question is quite broad. The best answer for this is to use all of them. You want to be everywhere simply because there's a lot of money in the table that you can't afford to ignore. Of course, this means you have to invest money and time to make it work.

and don't forget the most of the people are not holding their credit card and ready to spend money on social media sites. You should first engage with your fans..

Yes, your social media strategy must take your industry and the type of service/product into consideration.

I personally feel that Facebook is a must regardless of their industry, simply because everybody is on it. You just can't afford to miss out over there. But ecommerce retailers, more than others, will find it an especially effective platform.

Twitter is for direct, quick engagement, to allow your business to remain top of mind in your target audience.

Linkedin, needless to say, works best if your product/service is geared towards serving corporate needs.

Pinterest, only if you have loads of awesome pictures to share. Typically ecommerce sites with exquisite, or small products use pinterest. Pretty effective as the images your fans repin stays in their list forever.

I'd recommend that you read this blogpost by Shopify on Oreo's success in social media marketing. It's pretty mind blowing.

Your question is quite vague. Depending on your business niche there are social media are effective to use and some that are not. You need to look into that more closely and choose the best one for you, otherwise it'll end up being a waste of time and effort. But then again, like what the others said, it would also be a great idea to venture into all of them. More interaction in social media just means more exposure for your business, no matter what it is.
