How do you use social media for B2B marketing?

I have several b2b products which I wish to market on social media.

My initial plan is to build a list of influential bloggers in the niche and email them all with tailored pitches, asking them to post about these products.

I have heard it's a good idea to start with smaller blogs and then when you get coverage, to use that coverage to get bigger blogs interested - does that work?

What other suggestions do you guys have?

You can use Linkedin to build a network of professional connections. This is quite effective and if you are on Facebook you can use that as well.

I'd start by figuring out what problems my product solved and then I would find where groups of people hangout that have those problems. I would become friends with them and slowly send them to a landing page that offered a free e-book or something if they opt in.
