Someone has a facebook page I want

I'm helping my sister start a fashion line. The name she had chosen was available as a .com, but some one has already claimed it as a facebook page. The person who owns it is a young teen who has posted nothing more than a couple of doodles photographed with a mobile phone.

Fair play to them, they got it first, but I would like to try and acquire it.

I'm not too familiar with how facebook works. I have an account, but I never use it and have never bother to learn how to -- I missed the boat with the whole facebook thing. I would like to send the guy a polite message and ask if he would be willing to part with it, but I can't figure out how to.

Is there a way to send messages to other users, or do I have to friend them first? Will a Page eventually expire if a user is never active, and then can it be claimed by someone else?

Any pointers or help on this issue appreciated.

I be interest just to hear the information on that one...

My thought - just because you have .com doesnt give you rights on FB to get the Fan Page of it. (If I am reading this correct)

You can message the page directly from your account. Just send him a message asking, maybe offer him a few bucks? There is no reason you can't create the page with the same name, or just slightly different

Yep do exactly that. You may or may not get a reply back if you send the message. Best thing to do if you can't is to make a new page, you can give it the same name but need a different link. Example. My Page Name, www.facebook.com/mypagenamefanpage

I agree with Isaiah, if the owner of that fanpage refuse to your recommendation then renaming your page is your last resort.

          Agree with Isaiah,
Another idea to give a different name is to use the word "official" in it. Example. SF Line, www.facebook.com/sflineofficial

There are umpteen options to play with suffix and prefixes. This is just an example.

Sarah - I don't have the domain myself yet. Just weighing up the options really. I don't want to register the business, buy the domain, set up the site, get a youtube channel, twitter, pinterest, create a buzz, then find I can't get the matching Facebook Page name. He could post all sorts of rubbish and ruin the image of any brand I try to create, so I'd rather just obtain it from him politely, or move on completely with a different brand name all together.

jl810 - I would be happy to offer a few bucks, but I can't even find the option for a direct message (I'm a total Facebook idiot).

The direct message option has suddenly appeared, so I'll use that. (swear it was not there before!)

The page won't expire if he doesn't use it, so I wouldn't hold me breath waiting for that to happen. I would follow the advice given here and contact him politely, possibly offering a financial incentive, and take it from there.

    Thanks.

I've contacted him but had no reply yet. I don't think he even uses the page any more.

I think it is possible to create a page with the same name. After getting a few likes your page will be on the first place in search result so his forgotten page won't be an obstacle.

Or just simply add "- official fanpage" in the name and forget about the problem. You will be still easy to search by the brand name, visible and unique

I might have to do that. It's the url which i think is important tho. Could start gettting a bit long if I have to put "official" at the end of it.

If I remember correctly Google reads from left to right. So unless I missed something you could do what the domain guys do and add something on the end.

Register the domain with the keyword you want simply by adding a prefix or suffix. I've done this and whilst I plan to buy the .com eventually someday, my business is working well despite not owning the name I want.

Focus on the product or service you're selling, get success, then buy the name later.
