Effectiveness of social media marketing depends on the effectiveness of the strategies you implement for your business growth. The smarter your strategies are the more you profit from the opportunities. Just look at popular companies and individuals in social media and research their success. Their popularity proves that social media rocks. You need a professionally planned system to start your social media marketing with. As long as you get more experience you improve your system making it more powerful.

I agree with Max's comments above. I think that SM is a great way to market and every business needs to have a SM presence. However, I believe that you need to take a broader view than just thinking of it as a market place. It isn't about trying to sell directly to people but to build a relationship with them. Aggressive marketing seems to turn people off with SM.

I like the way you think. I've seen so many companies take the approach of just pushing their sales without doing any social relationship building. I've also seen clients that pay for social media services and then have crazy demands like: only post links to our site, don't mention any competitors, etc. They are doing it all wrong. If you do social media right, you are effectively communicating with and developing relationships while expanding your audience. There's little point to pushing your product to a closed circle of disinterested people. SM is a component of the broader marketing/branding of your business. It works well in conjunction with all other business practices.

Social marketing should really be called social engagement as that's what it's all about. Maybe with the odd sales/discount promo thrown in if you operate that kind of website or service. But ultimately it comes down to creating valued relationships with people, not using social channels as a billboard.

It depends on a bunch of things. What are you selling? Who are you selling it to? Consumer products do well on social media. B2B stuff, not so much. You'll have to figure out who your target customers are, find out where they hang out, what sort of discussions they have, then you'll want to get in there and be useful to them.

Social Media Marketing is very effective! And Social Media Marketing isn't just limited to Facebook/Twitter, it also includes Social Bookmarking, YouTube (Video Marketing), etc. The key to being successful with Social Media Marketing is to work on reaching a large audience in order to promote your product(s).

I agree that if you manage your SMM strategy effectively, you will gain great results. You are welcomed to experiment, to be creative and to try as many techniques as possible. Nowadays people just don't believe in ads, so they need to communicate first and then only they start to trust you and follow your advice.

Yeah, you really want to spend time and spread the SM out. For instance, something that I like to do (and I mark this on my calendar) is pick my social media site of the week and go hard on it. I still keep the other sites up, but one week I will dedicate myself to pouring into growing FB, then move to Google+ the next week. It spreads it out, lets things simmer and keeps me in check with all of the sites I have to manage.

Like what was said earlier, people are turned off to hard marketing on SM. You know who does a great job (even though they already have a popular product) is Skittles. Check out their facebook page for a prime example of healthy interaction/advertising from their managers and then look at what they do to get their dedicated fans involved. It's a great model to take after. Cheesy seems to work in this case.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[8311984].message }}
  • Yes, I agree. It is very effective yet still depends on the strategies you make. For you to be successful, always do an honest conversation for you to gain trust from your readers and followers. Also choose the right sites for your niche. There are lots of good social media sites that you can use. It shouldn't be complicated, you just have to be creative and idealistic.

I love social media marketing because you can start with very little money and build up a huge following by simply posting great content. In fact, one of my pages which I started under a month ago now has nearly 6000 followers with no paid advertising. I simply posted stuff on related pages and made use of as many S4S's as I could. From there I posted stuff that people were willing to 'like' and 'share' and got more fans that way.

Social Media is a good tool not only for building an audience, but in getting your pages ranked with Google and the main search engines.

Here are the four I tend to use :-

Google +1 - Post and Community Pages rank well with Big G.
FB Fanpage - Notes pages rank well with with Big G.
Pinterest - New boards and pins do well with Big G
Twitter - Micro messages are indexed quickly with Big G.

This is not the first thread with this question. I am always the lone wolf. I think SM is a waste for the neighborhood sub shop. The owner is working 80 hours a week trying to make payroll. He has no time for ENGAGEMENT. He understands he spends XXX on some kinda direct marketing( COUPONS) and will make X back. HOW you can compare the neighborhood sub shop to Skittles is ridiculous. Is any one REALLY going to drive 20 miles for his sub?
I think many people have a tough time with selling because they don't recognize that NOT all marketing works for ALL businesses.
SM has a place when you have a company that has a broad reach and time and money to BUILD relationships....MOST neighborhood companies don't.

I can’t think of anything better than social media marketing so I suggest that you get started right away—write quality and unique content, share your experiences and spend time helping potential clients find solutions to their problems. Have your content promoted through social media and you’ll see how great the results are. Look for vendors, partners, thought leaders and customers and as them to share your content.
    Good luck!

If you learn how to use it in a clever way, and not only for tweeting deals and coupons, then it's a great way of grabbing potential customers' attention. But you have to be careful not to do any aggressive advertising or have any abandoned accounts because that hurts your business reputation more than not using social media marketing at all.

SM is effective because of the personal engagement. Sites such as FB and Twitter are not seen as business so the impression of being 'sold to' is not there - provided you are not spammy and unethical of course. The best strategy is to first observe and note the etiquette of the site - i.e. LinkedIn is different to FB etiquette. Then fit in. Engage in conversation by commenting on posts or start your own posts. FB fanpage can be grown to 7,000 in one month with a good strategy that you consistently employ everyday. Overall, SM is effective if you engage everyday - consistency is the key - because you are breeding familiarity with your target audience.

To build proper social media you should do some research about it and the great way to learn is Google, Warriorfourm and eBooks. I have to post on this. I never would of thought I would be doing social media marketing. My eyes are wide open now. I have and do make money on it and its about the best thing since sliced bread.

An example. You have this forum and you have your sub forums ect, so you have your niches and micro niches, but its not as social as facebook is it.

Now you have facebook and you have a chat box ect, you can post on your timeline without most of it getting deleted, you can put links up for people to click. Compared to forums it is really unrestricted.

I have a seasonal website that makes money for a few months every year through Adsense and affiliate programs. The traffic in-season is crazy. For 5 years during that season I could count on traffic and money from SERPS. Last year, it got hit bad. Search traffic dried up. A little Bing, but 90% down. I had neglected social media. Got to work on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest during the off-season. Ranks were still down, but by getting a few thousand social followers and really interacting, the revenue shot back up. I used to think I couldn't make money off a base of followers like that. I always wanted the fresh search traffic that would come by and buy. But I'm doing better now with less traffic and more social. BTW, after focusing on social, search ranks have started to bounce back some. Social DOES directly affect SEO,too, and that's a fact.

Nowadays, Social Media Marketing is effective especially in business. FB/Twitter and YouTube are those few examples of this. Some of the businesses use FB/Twitter for their advertisements or promotion because most of the people have accounts here. YouTube is the 2nd Most Popular Search Engine. Eighty one percent (81%) of senior marketing executives now use online video marketing. More than 60% of consumers spend at least two minutes watching a video before buying. But like what others said, you need to use effective strategies if you will use SMM.

Social Media Marketing is effective if you are a big business owner. For a small business it is not much effective as money matters here..

I am a "small" business and it has been VERY effective for me. So whoever is reading this, don't take what he just said as Gospel, because it's not true. It may be for him, but not for me and countless others.

What's working for me is to build an audience of real people who like your Fan Page in a niche that has problems that can be solved by way of products you can offer them as an affiliate.

THere are many ways to go about doing that, but I reserve my strategies for people in my inner circle or those who pay me for consulting.

  • It is effective because there's a chance that your site be viewed by many subscribers and also has a chance to put your site in Google search from the social media sites that you have posted your site.

I've always believed that Social Media is effective when you build up audiences of people that actually want to read your content. There's a lot of marketers 'using' social media, but they haven't developed an audience that cares.

social media marketing can be effective for getting traffic but we have to know how to deal with it. We can use social Media Platform as a direct or indirect Marketing magnet for our targeted audience or customer.

Social media is a main sourse of traffic today. Of course good SMM strategy is pretty effective. But the problem is what IS a 'good SMM strategy'. SOcial meda is a field where rules are pretty quick to change. But there are some sustainable points to keep in mind.
Be loyal to your visitors and your visitors will be loyal to you. Don`t try to cheat, don`t be formal. Show that your social net community is made with soul and heart. In short, be friendly and honest. Honesty is the most sustainable (in a long distance terms) SMM policy.

Brand promotion, ad sense/advertisingthrough Facebook and other SMO platforms is proven to be very vital in all respect. Nowadays branding through Social media marketing is very popular amongst other upcoming methods in order to attract huge amount of potential customers of all generations.

There are some really interesting views in his article. And I love how he calls SM the charade, and how he left and how he - got back

Sure there are plenty of negative aspects of social media. On the other side, there are as many of positive aspects and I am not sure if it is worth the fight as you can't actually win.

        He made a great point:
Nobody really escapes social media. The online world has become a meaningful, yet flawed, method for interacting, dialoguing, engaging, debating, sharing and experiencing our world and our relationships with others in real time.
