Instagram popularity formula?

I am a total newbie at getting followers and popularity on instagram, I am not trying to sell a product or anything, I am just really curious to know how some people get 50k 100k followers and get thousands of like on every post they upload and a bunch of comments. Anyone know how people get their instagram account to that level? I know all the hashtag stuff, liking certian hashtags, following people, but it seems like it would take forever if it was like that.

If you monetize good and provide valuable content then people won't hesitate to like it and share it with others. Hashtags are also important.
