Niche Social Networks

Recently I have been thinking about ways to promote my content on social media. I use the traditional social networks like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook but then I thought, what about other social networks. Niche sites . Forums and social networks dedicated to niche topics.
A large part of internet marketing is social media marketing. It is a growing field and many people are realizing it's value as search engines put more weight on it. Many of you are already using traditional social media and maybe even marketing on forums, but people forget about niche social networks. There is tremendous value in these small networks, they are a gold mine for links and potential user/visitors.
I think there is a huge opportunity to build links, grow user base and spread your brand through these niches. I may have a bit of a bias towards this since my team and I created a social network for athletes called LivinSport. We promote our social networks to athletes AND Marketers. We tell them that they can promote their content using our site, which is true, after all you can make a free profile on our site and make posts that are virtually uncensored!
What does everyone think about this. Does anyone currently target niche social networks? Is there value in it?
