Try a VPN service such as BTGuard.com, BUT only use it for the sites you mentioned as some sites will suspend accounts using VPN's such as PayPal.

Find a foreigner who has been living in your area for a while and is doing business online - like a guest house or bar owner. They will know all about which VPN services are worth using. Some VPNs are also blocked by the great firewall of China. I was using a VPN recommended by a guest house owner when I was there a couple of years ago and it worked for most sites and all over China. I was connecting via mobile internet, BTW.

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Believe me, free one is slow and unstable. it'd give you a lot of headaches and waste your precious time. there are some cheap yet decent VPN solutions in China, and it costs less than 2 dollars for a monthly plan. you can try joyvpn.net

Try TOR Browser (be careful) or HideMyAss VPN.

Is Astrill still reliable VPN for China?

    Use a VPN.

I used my VPN the last time I was in China and I was able to access all of my social media accounts with no problems.

I'm in Thailand and have to use one to access certain sites here as well because of the "this content is not available in your country" restrictions.

I live in Nanning,Guangxi Province..not a problem at all with ExpressVPN for the last 2 years with average download speeds of up to 1mb/s .NEVER a problem, never an issue...its not actually illegal to use a VPN here (no its not) and no ones ever been arrested and put in jail that i have heard either. Many big businesses cant operate without one here and some have thier own VPN server. Just the Government is aware of it and "block" those sites.
I'm on FB most nights, logs in superfast, Youtube is fine ( though i tend to use IDM to download YT and watch later) but seriously, its funny when there's advice from people and they don't even live here.
Anyway....I can only recommend Expressvpn or Astrill is ok (has its moments) but as a long time user of Expressvpn its been great. Torrents download fast as well.
Without a VPN you wont be able to access Google, YT,Twitter, etc.. I'm on 10mbit line and thinking of going to the 20mbit as its only 80rmb/month. I pay 60 rmb ($9.70us/mth) NOW and theres no real download limit and we stream ANY movies to our tablets pretty fast (only viewable within mainland without a VPN).
So.. hope that answered a few Questions.
Rob? This is an old Thread...oh, well...it may get seen at some stage HAHA...
    Cheers.
