Did social networks kill forum communities?

I am curious to see what people think about forums in 2013? I recently started a forum using vBulletin and I am in the process of promoting it. Has social networking killed forums or could social networking be used as a tool to gain traffic and new users?

Social networking can help you promote it if done right, and no, forums are still being used in large numbers.

Well judging by the fact that your asking this on a forum and not on a social network Id have to say no. By the way if you want to get really technical forums are the original social networks.

  • I think social sites made it more difficult to start new forums, but the established ones are still going strong.

Forums are much better for certain things, like carrying on actual conversations.

Forum communities will still be around even if social network sites are dominating the internet. I have noticed in forums that you get more direct answers and are more helpful. Social networks are too general.

Not only do you get more direct answers but you can also reach more people. Just my opinion.

I'd say, social media haven't killed forums yet, but the future is not bright. Forums are still popular mostly because of the old members who keep them alive. Also, forums are great for smaller communities gathered around specific niche. Having in mind that users are getting used to features available via different social media and the availability of social media like engines I wouldn't bet forums will live as a stand alone platforms for a long time.

Yes and no. Things are always changing and evolving, so in a sense, things are always dying and being reborn. Forums haven't been killed off altogether, but they've taken a bit of a hit and have become a different animal as a result.

I remember spending a lot more time on forums before social media, and I used to be a lot more invested in them, too. I used to bookmark them, visit them everyday, go for hangouts, stuff like that. Social media has definitely changed that a little. It's hard to notice this because we live in the present, and we don't notice small changes very much.

That said, forums still have a place in the online world. It's a different pace, a different focus. Social network Groups and Hashtags somehow haven't been able to kill top forums- there's a certain quality about them that's hard to replace. People still use IRC, too.

Are forum communities dead? Of course not. Will they always be around? Probably, but they might diminish in quality and quantity as new alternatives crop up. It's hard to say for sure.

The best (albeit cheesy) thing I can say is- there's always a community for good quality content, so as long as you're working on that, you should be able to find interesting people to talk to and work with.

I think forums are not killed by social networks - they work in different ways. Social networks for general interests with completely different people and forums with mostly special interest content and people who think at least a bit the same way.

To some extent it is true that there is domination of social media on internet.but from technical pint of view people trust forums more than social networks because on forums people are very professional of what they have and can deliver better solutions due to their personel experience.

Forums are still and always be effective i think. Forums are good to get information, share opinions, discuss on important matters and again SEO benefits are there. Social Networks helps to promote brand, products etc. They are a best way to know about people's liking and disliking, how popular a brand is. So both have benefits.

Not for a long time. Almost every company nowadays has a Facebook - Twitter - G+ - etc. account and experts hanging there to answer all the questions. There is a slight difference between chatting with the expert via social media or depending on the good will of the unknown forum posters and customers are very well aware of that.

You guys should look at the forums from another corner. Look at it as average internet users - they don't care much about SEO, traffic, promotion, backlinks, etc. Average internet users are looking for reliable and quick information and entertainment and social media give them all of that while forums don't.

It's like comparing apples and oranges. Each has its place. I personally get more benefit from this forum than I do from any social network but I use both.
