are all Yahoo and Google groups junk?

Hi, this is Max. I've browsed through lots of Yahoo and Google groups to see if it's worth participating to try to get traffic from there because recently I stumbled upon a number of decent-looking video reports claiming that's worth a shot. The only thing I saw in those places was endless spam and miserable views it received. The same situation as in Facebook groups. I've dug tons of groups but there was only spam desert all around.

Is it me not knowing something and exploring wrong groups or they all are really dead? What about Yahoo and Google groups? What are they used for being killed with spam like with cancer? Any live groups? How do I find them? Are they good for marketing? Any experience, ideas? Thanks.

I was curious about the Google Plus communities. I share my blog posts in a few big ones, but I don't get any traffic, but I do get a lot of email notifications about other people sharing their blogs. And I delete those emails with the quickness. Which is most likely what the other people are doing when notified of my stuff.

So as far as Google Plus circles go, in my experience, they don't do anything. People are only concerned with getting their stuff shared, not reading anyone else's stuff. No traffic for me.

Could I be doing something wrong?

First off, Google Plus communities are not Google Groups ( see groups.google.com). As to G+ communities, they can drive traffic depending on the niche and community. My friend recently submitted a blog post to 8 well-moderated active communities 2-10k members each, internet marketing niche, and received 28 visits to his site, 7 pluses, 5 people added him to circles (it was his very first G+ post!). Just find right places, put different descriptions of the same blog post, use impressive images and hash tags in your G+ posts. I'm planning to be active on G+ too, currently I'm off social media.

I'm a Google noob. Thanks for clearing up the groups thing. I found a couple really good niche-related ones so we'll see how that goes.

I won't bother with their groups, though. Maybe in different niche than IM if you can find genuine groups where people really interact there but mostly, even if you get traffic, that will be very low traffic. But that's just my opinion based on what I've seen before. Maybe it works better for you. Good luck!
