From what I've read the answer is FB but it really depends on your niche and where your potential customers are hanging out

      Hi guru

Just out of interest, what have you read?

From personal experience I've found click thru rates to be very low for Facebook. Facebook tends to be very insular, i.e. people go on Facebook to be on Facebook, rather than to be linked to another site (if that makes any sense at all!)

Twitter tends to be less like this, with users more open to being taken elsewhere. There's also less concern regarding link shorteners as users realise this is the only way to get around the 140 character limit

Then of course you have Pinterest, Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon etc., which are all designed to take people elsewhere

I'd imagine you'd be best off with the latter sites from a conversion percentage rates - so the proportion of users who've seen your product advertised that click through. But they may not necessarily facilitate virality as easily as Facebook for example

Very interested to hear what others think

  • Lionofjudah,

Guru and nation both raise very good points. The network that will be best for you will depend on where your target market is and what you are selling.

You should also keep in mind that people go to social networks to kill time, talk with friends, look at images and video, etc. Its not a conducive environment for advertising. Even though you can have some success, you won’t have as much success as you would on a search network for example where people are going to do research on products or services to buy.

    Best,
    Shawn

The kind of person you're trying to get matters. For example if it's an existing relationship with a customer or a fan(someone who hasn't bought yet, but is a subscriber to your blog or newsletter), Facebook is the best social media tool. Conversion rates for Facebook are good when there is an existing relationship (modcloth.com is a great example). Twitter is great for promotional messages (new product, big sale, etc.). Pinterest has been growing and so has its conversion rates faster than any other social media channel. Good for getting what is considered an impulse buyer. But you need great pics or images.

It all depends on who your customer is and knowing where to meet them.

It's proven that Pinterest is probably the best spot to sell your stuff on, plus the pins have the longest shelf life on all of social media. Meaning that your link juice is better there. You will have to go to the "rich pins" and create an account that way so you can sell directly from the pin image.
