I think FB is slowly loosing the battle.

1. Google pushes their social network agressively
2. Thet gonna turn G+ into a powerful SEO instrument. Today you get a small bonus in SERP if your site has G+ vidget.
3. Google can wait. They have time just watch how FB audience start to hate FB. FB exschanges loyalty on money today.
4. G+ is ad free and I hope it will be untill the FB dies.

My prognosys is that in 2016-17 Google become a most popular social network.

You get also great bonus if you connect your site to facebook page that has good amount of view. Facebook.com is strong domain and one strong backlink to your page. I take advantage of it.

They have a long way to go to take over FB. G+ might be great for SEO but most individuals could care less about that when they are using social media solely for personal use.

The question is, in 2016-17, will the social network as we currently know it still exist?

The net changes so quickly, it's impossible to predict what it will be like in a few years with any accuracy

One thing we can say with a great deal of certainty is that Google will still be around, even if not Google+ specifically. As for Facebook? Who knows. It seems to have passed the Myspace test by integrating so well into the rest of the web that it almost forms part of its DNA. But cracks are already starting to appear. It's less of a social network now and more of a way to engage with brands

Will people still want to use social networks in the same way in a few years given the rise of chat and content sharing apps on smartphones? Who knows?

Yes you just tell right thing. Now number of Gplus users are increasingly as fast as possible. Second thing that gplus post cached instantly while facebbok post was not cached instantly or not cached long time also.
So, Gplus give yough competition to FB.
