Are consultants fooling clients regarding social media?

Gary Vaynerchuk says it takes two to three years of massive effort to get results from social media for small businesses, yet some social media consultants promise results in a few months.

Why Small Business Isn't Winning on Social | LinkedIn

"3. Finally, when a small business ends up working with a smaller agency or consultant, those entities can be dishonest about the realities of what they can do for their client. They don't say "Listen, this is a three year play" because the client is operating in a world where they're saying "If we don't see results in 90 days, we're out." So the agency or consultant makes a bunch of promises, and then you're in a bad situation."

If you offer social media marketing services to small businesses, how do you position the results of social media with your clients?

It must all come down to the plan for the campaign. When you consider how quickly something out of the blue can trend on twitter for example, there must be ways of making things happen so that it doesn't take three years. If the campaign is interesting enough and catchy enough it should be possible to obtain results more quickly. But it requires creativity and many so-called consultants don't have a lot of that!
