Pinterest's impact on Google

I want to share with you my experience with Pinterest's campaign and its impact on Gooogle search results. The main of the campaign was to rank for the "lingerie wholesale" query.

Pinterest was supposed to be one of the parts of our inbound marketing strategy. Just another social media channel where we could promote our partners site. I decided to follow the latest trends. Reading, watching and analyzing all given advices about new directions of Google indexing methods and how everything changes, I understood that social media campaigns might be double-edged sword. On the one hand you acquire new customers in social media channel itself and on the other they might have an influence on SERP especially in Google.
To be honest I've never liked the methods offered by many SEO agencies - they seemed to me a kind of cheating. I wanted to create something important and strong enough to have a real impact on SERP. So I decided to do SEO for our sites starting from social media. Of course I knew it was going to be hard task.

At the beginning of March while started serious Piterest campaign I checked what results Google displays for our company name. Our Pinterst account was on the 4th position. At that moment I realized that Pinterst may have huge impact on Google and could be used as a great method for SEO purposes.
Ceteris Paribus - "with other things the same"
When we want to verify any thesis or check if something simply works we need to remember that all other things should be equal or held constant. So I have created kind of isolation from other sources that may affect our results in Google and was focused on Pinterest only. No link building or any other SEO methods. Just me, the site, Pinterest and a hard work.

The Results

At the beginning of March the site was out of first 20 pages before the Pinterest's campaign started. After 2 weeks time it jumped onto the 112th position. But it was just the beginning.
After 5 months of the Pinterest's campaign the site reached first top 2 positions in many countries around the world (including USA, Germany, Greece, Poland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Brazil, France, Russia, Argentina, India, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates etc.).
We checked results in 68 different countries all over the world. We had the following positions in Google:
1st position - 3 countries
2nd position - 49 countries
3rd position - 12 countries

There is another huge advantage of my Pinterest's campaign. Google search engine indexed our site and our Pinterest's boards on the top of results for many others keywords associated with our lingerie wholesale offer and brands which products we sell.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. There is also available the documentation of the results, publications in media of and a book published, however I'm not sure if I can put any link here.

Pintrest has some rules and restrictions, if one follows these. than Pintrest really one of the goldmine. And for the pintrest audience it is really clever to use intersting picture.

First of all we need to have really good photos which attract pinners attention. In described case the campaign was conducted for lingerie wholesale site - so pins were attractive to be repinned or liked by others.
As you start your campaign you need to show your pins to larger audience, so the best way is group board related to your pins. It is not easy to get invitation and requires a lot of effort, you can also use BoardInviter.com.
We also used "selfish" strategy. If you want to create really strong account (for search engines as well) you have to be kind of authority and influencer that others will follow. In the campaign described in this post - we have never pined, repined or liked other photos than our customer ones and they come from the customer site only.
Of course this is difficult strategy, because your content (pins) need to be very attractive themselves to attract other pinners attention, so group board is a must. That's why I don't think that Pinterest is for every kind of business. Of course you can create many other boards not related to your offer to attract pinners. I just don't like this idea as other ideas of many Pinterest advisers and bloggers. They always suggest to repin, like other pinners stuff or follow them and hope they will do the same back.
