question about posting html links on facebook

11 replies
I have a travel fb page and I'm part of an affiliate program. I want to post their html codes on my page but when I do that, the whole code is listed as well when I post under the status section. Is there anyway around that - preventing the code displaying?

    You can use a custom lead page tab or you can just use the link. For most affiliate programs, the link should be all you need to cash in!

      I do paste the affiliate link on the status box and it does work however, the actual link is fully shown and it looks terrible. Is there a code that can be added to only show certain text such as "click here" which take the person to the affiliate link?

        The best way to do this is to use a 301 redirect I think also known as "cloaking".

        What you do is go out and buy a domain if you don't want to buy a .com then get a .info or whatever is cheap BUT for appearances sake I would spend the $10-$12 and buy a .com. Make sure the domain name has your affiliate product name in it if it's available and if not have the product name in there somehow.

        For Example: If your product name is "lose weight fast" get the domain LoseWeightFastDOTcom if that's not available then it probably will be with another extension such as .net, .co, etc. If all those are taken, modify the domain name something like LoseWeightFast2013DOTcom or something along those lines.

        Once you've bought your domain go into the C-Panel (I'd suggest you use Host Gator to host your domain name.) and go to "301redirects" find your domain name in the drop down and there will be a box to enter your affiliate link as the destination your new domain will forward to. That's it.

        Now you can post your domain URL on FB and it looks a lot better than some long affiliate link and more professional too. Once someone clicks on your link they will automatically be forwarded to the affiliate link and page.

        If yo uwant to learn more about how to do a 301redirect go to YouTube and search it and you'll find lots of helpful videos. This is real easy and again, you'll look a lot more legit on FB.

    FB allows you to use URL shorteners like bit.ly.. which you can use for creating your decent link redirects. Think that would be the better option.

      so by using bit.ly it won't affect my affiliate link, meaning that my affiliate will still be able to know that the prospect came from my page?

        I agree that using bit.ly is the easiest way and it will forward directly to your affiliate link but IMO having a normal domain name show up on FB looks more legit, professional and I've found that way has a higher CTR than bit.ly or something like it.

        Again either way will work I'm just a stickler for the details..

        If your affiliate product is high dollar I would definitely consider having a landing page to capture first name and email to better monetize your leads and build a list because in most cases, FB users are not going to buy right away PLUS you can offer them other related affiliate products over time. That's just my "2 cents".

    No bitly wont effect your affiliate links. Also a good alternative is goo.gl

    You should read more about the Facebook Open Graph Protocol here - The Open Graph protocol

    By adding metadata like the example below, you can control what Facebook will display when you post a link.

    Code:
    <meta property="og:title" content="The Rock" />
    <meta property="og:url" content="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117500/" />
    <meta property="og:image" content="http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/rock.jpg" />
    You can test the changes you have made to your website by using the Facebook URL linter - https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug

    I think SFPro's strategy is good as Facebook uses Open Graph Protocol, once my posts in one of my fan page showed images which is not supposed to be the image of the post I required. Later after some headbugs and trouble shooting I found it is the thing to be solved with Opengraph.

    Anyways thanks SFPro I will have a try and update soon.
