Improving followback ratio

I have a twitter feed that is focussed a particular conference. I look and follow users who are tweeting on this subject, hoping most will followback.
About 20% followback. I'm looking for some strategy on improving my followback ratio. So far I've been focussing on my profile and profile picture

    Finding some crucial hash tag that is related to that conference or some famous personality or some controversial thing hashtags can help you get some more attention, resulting in more followers
    also i have seen that if you can find the top twitter users in your niche that are talking about that specific conference and then try to be the first one to reply to their tweet with some interesting or controversial statement then it can also help get some fast followers
