Yes you are right. Complete analysis of the website is very essential and moreover the website must be designed in user's perspective and the content in site must be unique and informative for visitors. Onpage optimization must be done correctly such as title, meta title, description and h1,h2,alt must be given perfectly. And well submitting your site in google webmaster tools is more essential.

.....can be overstressed enough. You can save yourself a lot of time and energy analysing your keywords.

If you are totally new to SEO then looking for some lower hanging fruit such as long-tail keywords may help you get a small steady stream of traffic and allow you to start working on on-page optimization.

Sometimes the best way to learn is just do it.

I am not sure if you already have a website and you just want to know how to begin SEO. I assume you already have website up and running, however here are the basic things you need to follow to get started with SEO specially in current scenario.

1) Keyword Research: The first and far most important, you need to research keywords and target the low and medium competition keywords which is not only easy to rank but at the same time get good amount of visitors as well. You can use FREE tools like Google Keyword Planner, MarketSamurai etc.,
2) Write a good unique content for your website: Content is really a king and queen both, write very unique original content. Take into account your potential visitors, put your self in your visitor place and write down what you expect when you visit website like yours and write content based on that. You can outsource the content writing to member offering here at WF or any other source.
3) Once you are done with keyword and content just upload everything on your website and leave it for some time. Say one month or so, do not do anything as regards SEO.
4) After that slowly build links, first start with few Social Bookmarks, then few directory submissions [high quality], release a news content on PR sites announcing the launch of website, use web2.0 blog posts, use all the other high quality link building slowly and gradually.
5) When you build links maintain the keyword variations wisely, you can try to visit couple of SEO Discussion Blogs like SearchEngineWatch, SEORoundTable etc, to learn about anchor text diversity and other ideas.

In short, you just to need upload your website with proper keyword research, unique and original content and then leave it for some and slowly build links from wide range of sources.

As has been the consensus stated above, depending on if you have a site or not: keyword research, well constructed unique content, on/off site seo including appropriate article titles, internal links, external links and I would also suggest incorporating social media.

When you launch your website it is a good idea to input your main keyword into Google and Copy+paste some of the URLs into the "landing page" field in the keyword planner. This will help you find related keywords that you can filter to help you target your keywords faster and more efficient based on competitor data that's already proven to be working.

Create a tight themed website with gr8 content and architecture. If this is done correctly then your half job is already done. You can start with following activities:

1: Keyword Research
2: Meta Title and Meta Description for all your pages
3: H Tags optimization
4: Bold tags ( Most important keywords in the page)
5: Internal and External links from your pages

By doing all the above things you can prepare your website to be SEO friendly and then do regular content marketing using following;

1: Guest Blogging
2: Commenting on authority blogs
3: Forum participation

And anything which can add value to the users.

Add as much content as possible. With more content, you'll attract more number of visitors who will be typing long tail keywords. You will be surprised to know what all they type to see relevant search results. I think after that link building is significant.

Your website design is important and technically it should serve the purpose which Crawlers (Search Engine) like. Dont use frames, Flash, Too much of inline CSS etc.

This should be done as early on as possible, even before work on the website begins. This is because you need to know what your website should be ranking for. Remember to base your keywords on more than what people are searching for in Google.

Where to start... boy, you have plenty of sleepless nights ahead of you. Congrats!!!

Like just about everyone has said, research key words. Look at your competitors - better yet, don't do that. Look at total off your subject keywords. Open up the source code and look at where, when, and how those keywords were implemented.

The reason I say look at something totally different is for what I think is a simple reason. If you are in a niche market, and you look at what everyone else is doing in that market, you are basically looking in a closed bubble. everyone looks to see what the other guy is doing. And thusly everyone is doing the same thing.

Try searching a specific hotel name in Vegas or something. Look way out of your bubble. Porn and travel are the 2 most demanding Niches in the SEO industry. You might even find Table Tags ( summary and caption ) - my favorite btw.

Im just saying look beyond your specific market, and see what other more complex markets are doing. Bring those concepts and ideas back into your niche and see what happens. You will be amazed!

I better hit Submit before I delete the Table Tags tidbit hahaha
