Terrible Facebook Slap

Facebook just changed its algorythm once again.

Even if you have 100-200k likes now your reach is almost 1/100...

that's terrible!

Have you experienced a drop in the organic reach?

this has been discussed at length now. If your individual or small business, Facebook is about to get whole lot more expensive. It was the plan all along. Now that thousand of fan pages have been built, nurtured, tweeked to fine running machine...facebook has a surprise for you. They are turning off the faucets. If you haven't seen it yet...u will. Facebook is now same advertising medium as print newpapers were and tv are now. If you want the people to see it...you will pay for it.

The Facebook login page says it will always be free... but is there a free lunch anywhere?

To use another metaphor from the animal kingdom, Facebook’s attitude can be summed up by the story of the scorpion and the frog: the scorpion asked the frog to give him a ride across the river, promising not to sting him — and of course he did anyway, at which point the frog asked him why. According to the story, the scorpion said: “I can’t help it, it’s my nature!”

For Facebook, media companies and their content are simply a means to an end. And at a time when the engagement levels for content on the social network are dropping, it needs to do whatever is necessary to fix that problem — and if that means smothering certain kinds of content it will do that. And media companies will get another lesson in relying on a third-party platform.

Hello! Yes I've lost about 2/3 of traffic. I'm running meme and funny pics fanpage, and drop in views is significant. Any ideas what to do?

    Uh no.

Reach of today's posts from my page that has 34k likes:

And reach from my page that has 13k likes:

That said, anyone who tries to get into the FB game needs to think twice about it. It's ALOT of work to create posts day in and day out that will get engagement. But guess what? Getting people to click a link and buy a product from you on FB is even more work and with worse results. Even if you only spend 10 cents a like, that's $10,000 for 100k likes. Figure that mayyyyybe 10% will see a post of yours promoting a product (product posts get way less reach and engagement than memes, etc). And of those 10k who see it mayybbbeee 1% will click the link to your product and of those mayyyybe 2% will convert and you'll start to see how much time it takes to make a small amount of money.

So in the scenario above, if you're promoting a $20 product in a post and make a 10% commission, then you made a whopping $4 commission total. Good luck recouping that $10,000 investment you spent on ads.

May be because they were fake likes

You can look back and see where this became evident that the golden age of facebook was over with. When they took away the sidebar pics where everyone used arrows to point to the like button.

Then the "no words" or helpful hints about what to do in the timeline cover photos.

But this is their business, they have the right to run it the way they want to run it, and it needs to make a profit. The big companies who can afford the splash screen ads, are going to dominate Facebook now, for the most part.

Other people can advertise there, but it is going to cost, and it is not going back to the other way any time soon.

This has hit my 290K like page hard. I was making over $100 on adsense and it has dropped to less than $20. I am changing my model and working on adding email subscribers from Facebook and then sell them products, etc.

When people like Mari Smith started saying that it was important to begin using FB ads, you could read the handwriting on the wall. She began talking about that right after the venture capital loans and the IPO.

One of the problems with internet business that I have seen, is that unless a person had a regular business background to filter through the news reports and such, they didn't realize that venture capitalists and the investors in an IPO expect to get paid on their investment.

That monsy has to come from somewhere and if FB had been generating enough money they would not have needed either VC's or to sell stock. The money to pay those people comes from new revenue streams, and the only thing Facebook has to sell are ads, unless they are going to go down the Roboform route and start charging for accounts.

I hated Facebook from the very beginning. Not the platform itself, the ownership. Just a gut feeling back then. I never have used it for anything business-related and never will.

wait im confused. Does this "change" effect facebook ads or just free traffic from facebook? What happened and how has it made things worse?

Ok, never mind my earlier post. There is definitely a change. I see it mostly in posts of mine that have links. The average reach of my posts with links in them has dropped by half.

what do we do then? Do we link our ad to a landing page with a email signup? Does this effect people who solely grow a fanpage with the paid advertisement or is this only for free fan pages?

It affects posts by your FB fan page.

My average post with a link in it now has a reach of less than 50% of the reach they had before the algo change this month.

I have a TON of data from all the pages that I manage, which have a lot of engagement. Before December, the posts with links had twice the reach as they do now after the algo change.

This has made a huge difference as to how much I can afford to spend on advertising to get new page likes. If, before the algo change, my cap was 20 cents a like (breakeven point), now it might be 10 cents a like, or even less because of future algo changes. Getting likes below 10 cents is VERY hard to do for any reasonable length of time because most of the evergreen niches have been, and still are being, advertised to death by everyone and their mother looking to make a buck on FB.

All of my reaches have not gone down. My posts with links have gone down (these are by far my most valuable posts to me). My photo posts and status updates are fine.

Facebook is still an amazing place to advertise, especially with offers direct to your website or landing page. When done right, you can do REALLY well. However, when done wrong, you can lose lots of money fast so be smart and do lots of testing.
