Is SMO now more important than SEO?

Social Media is starting to monster the traditional Search Engines. Should I be firing my SEO expert and focusing more than ever on Social Media campaigns? Or is this premature?

What do you think?

Where are your customers, what's the best/easiest/most cost-effective way to reach them?

    There's your answer.

The habits of online consumers are unpredictable enough as to do my head in at times. I assume my customers are online. Highest ROI is the main focus - I concentrate on quality control and ultimate user experience.

Best/easiest/most cost-effective way is still being discovered, reexamined, tweaked etc. You seem to assume that I've already perfected an ultimate process.

      No Sir! Hence the question.

I know, and it may read like sarcasm at first glance but I did answer your question: test both and figure out which works better. You can begin to draw a hypothesis by interacting with your target niche online and seeing how they behave. Go from there.

hard to say, your post title is pretty well optimized for a long tail but reasonable keyword phrase, but the website that article is syndicated from has a bunch of dead links on the front page So I am not sure as a marketing firm, they would be the ones to pay attention to.

Mobile apps are already passe, so many businesses have one. How many levels of menus do people have on their phones now. I do think that mobile apps are good, I just think they need to be astoundingly useful to deliver the type of results that the marketing firm who wrote this article say they can.

And based on a fairly open-ended question looking for assisting replies, you go off in to an ltk discussion? I'm happy to plaster the 'newbie' label across my forehead if that would help. Be remedial with me if you must. Clarity sought.

It never entered my mind that you were a newbie in any way at all.

Your question was pretty broad, What do you think? So that was what I was thinking.

          1. People post threads in here all the time titled with longtail keyword phrases and yours was a great example of that. So I was admiring of your skill at SEO, intentional or unintentional as the case may be.

          2. The article you cited was from syndicated from another website. When I went to visit that website they billed themselves as an online marketing firm, but when you go to that site to rad the article as originally published (which I think is an interesting thing to do), the links below their slider don't work. So then I wonder about the equality of their information in the first place.

After reading some of what is written there, I see it is mostly kind of inoffensive, but kind of dull.

What I don't understand is why you would ask if you should fire your SEO firm based on what I read in that article, nothing in there suggested anything that you should consider that.

The only prediction that I could find, and granted I only read it twice, is this "Technology will continue to change the Internet marketing world. It's up to you to recognize opportunities and capitalize on them." which isn't much of a prediction.

That leads me to wonder what the main point of this article. The title suggests that the main point is SEO vs SMO, but there is no clear position except things are going to change. So that makes me think based on what I know of eyeball spacing in print media, that the second point in the article about mobile apps is the most important point the author had in mind.

Mobile apps have been around for a while and hot for more than a year. That makes them ancient history in the marketing world. Nothing wrong with having a vanity app, it has taken the place of the print book autobiography published from a vanity press in the doctor's office.

So that's what I was thinking. I apologize for not being clearer, I intended no offense in any way, I wrote the shorthand version of my thinking and I should have started with the long hand.

I am a "newbie" as I have not made a lot of money online through my efforts. Income generation is the ultimate goal for most online marketers etc. Newbie here. Thanks for your thoughts.

Rockstar writer is right, it's not so much an issue of "either or" but what works best in a certain context.

SEO is not really going anywhere. People will still (and always) need to search for information and it will continue to make money. Social media is better for certain niches and situations and SEO alternatively is better, depending on the context.

@TheRockstarWriter - I'm just a little concerned that this whole Social Media 'tsunami' may actually morph in to something even bigger in a very short timeframe. Testing has proved inconclusive thus far except to say that I am becoming increasingly convinced that my best IM prospects may actually reside more in the email marketing/ solo ads avenue.

I guess the thread subject sprang out of my instinctive angst, generated by the digital prognostications of a few IM 'gurus'. Hey, I don't want to be left behind. Trend analysis over ...

Totally understandable. I'm no expert on the specific topic, and don't want to tell you to take your business in one direction or the other. That's your livelihood on the line.

I would however, pose these questions to you (if you haven't asked yourself already):

      1. Why are your results inconclusive? Not enough data, or there just isn't one particular method sticking out? If it is the former, test more I'd say. If it is the latter, I'd probably attack from a different angle: are they using everything somehow and if so what is the flow (how do you take advantage of that flow)? Might be the right way to do things, might be wrong.

      2. Why are you convinced that email is the way to go? I don't know your experience, if this is part of your testing, if that is what other people in your niche trend to or if you just see a lot of "money is in the list" threads that pop up on IM sites. Whatever it is (and whether it is right or wrong is up to the results after you implement) make sure that you're 100% comfortable with whatever you have backing that assertion up.

In short, SMO is still an important part of SEO.
Just my opinion, the truth is that SMO is very popular nowadays, but to be with SEO, there is no comparable.

Both are different and important for website. SMO gives you REPUTATION whereas SEO gives you PROMOTION. Now, It's totally depends upto you that what do you want.

SMO is often about promotion too, surely! Your comment confuses.

I'm wondering why not use both? Get hoards of traffic from your ranked keywords and move to make them followers of your social media pages. Whatever happens to either of the 2, seo and social media, you have both sides covered.
