What do you think of newsletter subscription pop-ups appearing on a websites homepage

When it comes to monthly newsletters including special offers, would you consider it a good idea to include a newsletter subscription in a pop-up window message that pops-up on a website's homepage as soon as you open it. the goal behind it being to encourage subscribers to our monthly newsletter.

thank you

It improves subscription rates but it might get on your reader's nerves if they are planning to read more than one post. Try to get a plugin that can use cookies to monitor the number of impressions per user and fire up the pop up window when the user scrolls till the end of the post. John Lumer's blog has an awesome pop up plugin.

Well I don't like pop up screens at all and I think most people would be annoyed to see one, I only recommend a homepage with email subscription embedded at the top of the page or at the right hand side.

That would be a great way to get

    more opt-ins.

    Have you looked into pop-under?

I don't like the Pop ups. Some pop-ups that aren’t rendering properly can create a huge floating box over your posts and pages that people can’t exit out of. They’re going to get intensely frustrated because they’ll need to close their browser completely to get back to what they were doing.

      Hi Mira,

Pop ups are great for generating leads to your newsletter but you should take into consideration that Google does not like pop ups. If you are monetizing your site through Adsense you might get penalized.

I think Pop-Ups turn people off.

I hate when I see pop ups and I leave that site – so if that site is doing business, they are not getting my money.

This is a tough call, but I think that "less is more" in this respect. You might actually get more people to sign up if you embed the form on all of your pages, especially if the form really "pops", color-wise. I understand why people use the email subscription pop-up, but I believe that it has become over-used and a lot of people are getting turned off by it. Just my two cents.

Most of the ones I've seen appear before you even get a chance to read anything.

As soon as I see one, I CLICK THE BACK BUTTON!

People are used to pop ups. If they are not interested they will just close the pop and continue reading. But they will increase your sign ups dramatically if done right. You have to be aggressive to succeed.
