What is your goal, facebook likes, twitter followers or website traffic?
If I know your goal, I may have some tips for you.

Free is a whole lot slower, but you get more bang for your buck.

Paid is a whole lot faster, more targeted, and gets you better conversion rates.

Yep, maybe you can spend a few bucks first and get a decent amount of likes/followers etc - after that you should see 'free/organic' traffic coming in too.

Get involved with Google+, Facebook and Pinterest if you haven't already. Engage your readers in real conversation online. Establish yourself as a niche expert on forums. All these things are free to do, but take time. And, they are perfect for anyone starting out with a limited budget.

Paid promotion beats free almost every time on any channel....yes, you may not payout dollars with free but you pay in time....would you make more money at a part time job with the same time invested? That is probably the number one question IMers need to ask themselves.

And, lots of people just starting out in internet marketing don't know which direction to go, so any money put into Facebook ads or Adwords is a real waste. If you have a few years under your belt and established blog or product you are promoting as well as experience with advertising, then paid ads is the way to go.

Its totally depends upon your strategy, if you pay for social media campaigns then you'll get a lot of quality users and members for your profile, page or video. If you use a free service like addmefast.com then you'll just get 100% quantity and 0% quality.
