Can You Scrape FB UID's

How does FaceBook view scrapers?

I have seen this question floating around BHT for awhile. But, I have never seen anyone offer up a satisfactory answer. Perhaps, the best answer I can get is "it depends".

There is the classic arguement that FB would not have custome audiences if they did not want you to use scrapers. But, they probably intended this feature to advertise to your own group list.

I have seen videos where it shows phoney uid's that FB inserts to detect the use of scrapers and how you can manually remove them. If you are going through a large list, this can be tedious, but possible a good idea.

There are some nebulous terms that talk about people who have opted in, or where you have permission to include them in your list. Clearly, taking thousands of names from various groups does not meet any of these terms.

So, we are down to wondering if FB is going to look the other way if you are not spamming a group, using legitimate landing pages or possibly keeping them FB by directing them to a Fanpage.

Does anyone feel that they have a good handle on this?

Well first off, keep in mind that you dont have to 'scrape' anything to get a FBID. Facebook has functionality built right into there API to get the ID's of people who are say .. members of a specific group, or active users of a specific fan page. Considering they give programmers the tools to do it I cant see how they would be against it.

I feel the same way. It's very simple to see what data Facebook allows others to collect just by replacing www. with graph. and you'll get the essential data just from there.

I just can't fathom why FB would create the custom audience feature, which includes the ability to upload UID lists, and then prevent people from scraping. If they wanted the feature to simply be to add private email lists for targeting, then they wouldn't have added the UID feature.

Also, banner advertising is not spamming. It's not invading one's privacy, especially when anyone can disable them from their newsfeeds.

To me, scraping UID lists is something Facebook ought to be encouraging.
