Facebook Advertising: How to select audience for more Likes?

So I have tried paying for likes and was doing horrible, averaging $1.00 per like... then I found the Facebook tool where you can edit your ad much more and I want to try this again. I am trying to promote my dog training page for my website here:

https://www.facebook.com/brightdogonline

And I am not sure what to put for interests and what is a good number of people to reach? I typed in

United States
Men and Women
Ages 20 - 45

Interests:
ceasar milan got 57,489 people
Dog grooming got 1,970,010 people
dog trainer got 19,936 people

Sitting at 520,000 people potential reach on the little radar, is that a good number or should I be doing something else?

Sorry I am brand new to using this Facebook Advertising.

Facebook is offering much deeper targeting. Try to imagine your potential customers and, what are they doing and looking for.
    Are they sport active?
    Are they theatre lovers?
    Do they like entertainment?

When I target on facebook, pool of potentional customers is 500 to 1mil MAX!

Good question Alexbrightdog, I'm also interested in knowing how to get the CPC/likes down when going after the U.S. market, do we go super targeted? so in the dog training example we would target maybe "puppy potty training" or "training toy breeds- women only" etc., etc. So in doing so we create less competition for ourselves and the costs go down, is this correct?
