Do I want to promote my youtube video or the site page that contains the embedded video?

I just posted a new video article/blog post with embedded youtube video to my site. When I promote the new video, through social and backlinks, do I want to link to the youtube video or directly to my site?

I know it probably seems like a silly question when the end goal is web site traffic but I have been reading so much lately about the power of youtube. If I have all the proper links back to my site in the video description, should I just promote the video or do I want to promote the blog post at my site with the embedded video? Help and thank you!

There really isn't a clear cut answer.

If you push links to the video on YT, it's easier to improve your ranking in YT and Google search.

On the other hand, you can't control what YT does and they could delete your account at any time. So if you push links to the video on your own site, you will be improving an asset you own and control.

Since there are pros and cons to each, I like to mix it up. Your marketing plan shouldn't center around a single video on a single page.

Start by placing a Google AdWords ad with YouTube assuming your video meets all the criteria. Promote the video directly so that you get the max rankings for search and featured videos. If you can't promote it that way, then try the site directly. The benefit with using Google AdWords is you are guaranteed views for the money you spend. The downside is your video has to get approved and many types of websites (affiliate offers) are not allowed in the destination URL.

If you are promoting an affiliate product always promote it from your site and then when you post on YouTube you are always promoting your own url so that is should never be removed from YouTube. This way you can always change your affiliate products any time you see they are no longer worthy to promote.

Depends which action will benefit you,

    A blog affiliate sale?
    Youtube views?
    Channel Subscription?

If your end goal is to make money through your website, I'd be promoting the bog

In my opinion do both, this way it's a win-win situation. It's good to get traffic to both your website, and the video - this is what is expected to happen from quality content, no matter the niche.

However, note that if you want to rank for the YouTube search results, you will need high retention views, likes, subscribers, and comments. I can help here, check out my signature!

In my opinion, I say DO BOTH. When I make a new blog post that has a youtube video in it- I go to my social media, and first I link directly to my video.

Then, I make another followup social media post that will explain that I made a new blog post and to come check it out. That way- you cover both bases.

In addition, I sometimes will make 1 post that includes both! For example: I will say something like "checkout the new post I just published at yourwebsite.com. It's about x and contains a great video!"

This way, they will know I made a new blog post, and will click through to your site, and then watch your youtube video.

I bet in the end, it really doesn't make too much of a difference what tactic to use...what's most important, to me, is that the actual blog post itself AND the youtube video provide GREAT, INFORMATIVE CONTENT.

    Good luck!

I'd say these comments are good food for thought. I really agree with it depends on your objective with the video and your end goal. Ultimately, if you want to build a list from your videos and you have a description link to a sign up page then promoting the video is good. If you only capture leads on your blog, then promoting the blog is better, since that is what the video is for any way. Of course there are other scenarios than these but these are just examples of which way to go based on your desired outcome.
