Why do people care more about followers / likes than engagement?

Hey all,

Bit of a (short) rant / question here, but why are people so hung up over the number of followers / likes / etc. that they have to the point where that's all they care about? Are they blind to the fact that the numbers are useless without engagement (unless it's all just for ego)?

To be honest, I look at some pages with, say, 250,000 Followers and each post gets 1-3 Retweets / Favorites and I think it just looks silly.

Sorry to rant; wanted to get that off my chest.

The number of followers you have is much easier to quantify than engagement, which can be a nebulous measure that is hard to compare. Also pure follower count is a strong social proof symbol; I've seen some businesses proudly displaying their large follower count prominently on their website.

I think this is the part where they buy likes for followers (not the same interest/location)

On FB ads, if you'll use costume audiences (upload targeted user'id with the same interest/location), or imagine you have the Page "Dog Lovers" and 99% of 100,000 loves dogs?

Well I think that would not be useless at all. That's $$$.

That's true, I really don't care to have any followers or likes if they are not reform real people who are engaging in my business. They aren't really followers then if they aren't interested in what you offer.

If they are real likes and you're not engaging them then something is wrong with the content. I think some people want fake likes hoping for a bandwagon effect. They think that after they get the fake likes real people will follow. It doesn't really work that way on facebook though.

I think the higher the number of likes is, the higher the engagement will be, if the page is updated regularly. As simple as that.

  • You're exactly right. I'd rather have a page with 5k people and a larger engagement rate than a huge page with no engagement rate.
