Physical products tend to sell well compared to digital products these days. For example, people would buy an acne gel instead of an ebook on how to get rid of acne. Try promoting amazon products and see how it goes...

Email marketing is a broad subject- my advice would be to find a group of people (your target market) and then find out their needs and find a product to meet those needs.

If you just grab a product and start trying to sell it you are relying on blind luck to be successful.

Do a split-testing type of thing. Try to sell different things during different times, and see what attracts buyers. Then stick to that.

The best approach is to build up an email list in a particular market, engage and interact with the list, offer great free content and value, and ask them what products and services they want. You can start with affiliate marketing, and then create your own products when you have proven there is demand.

If you find the correct niche and also know how to promote your products then you can market almost everything.

Yeah, I don't want to pour a cold water on the discussion, but I actually spent $800 on facebook PPC for likes and subscribers, via opt-in landing page. Landing page was built into fan page tab. I was giving freebie for email and I rotated 3 completely different LPs. For that money I got about 4,000 Likes and 70 emails. That was in weight-loss.

There must be a better way to develop list than Facebook.

Well it depends on what your targeted audience is interested about.
Find their interests and sell them what they would like to buy from you.

E-mail marketing is less about the product and more about your relationship with your audience. If your audience trusts you and the product is relevant to your niche it will convert well.

It always helps to know something about the product. You don't have to eat, breathe and live it per se' but some knowledge helps. Planning ahead with research like the others said is a start.
