Is anyone using Instagram in their business with success comparable to facebook or twitter?
You'd think Instagram's audience is fairly young, right?

Interesting facts, thanks for sharing. Specially the first one stroked me: "13 People were employed when Instagram was bought by Facebook for $715m.". They got to have a pretty streamlined system to be able to manage with only 13 employees (at the time they were bought). As far as I know they rely heavily on Amazon AWS so they probably don't have a lot of server staff them self, but 13 employees is still an impressively low number.

Given that Instagram seems to be all about applying rather pointless "filters" to photos to give them fancy borders or make them look like they were taken back in the 1970's, and so forth - is it really worth having an account for a business if say you wanted to share high-quality, un-doctored/un-filtered "clean" images? - i.e. for example, a software vendor wanting to share/promote screenshots of their latest product isn't likely to be drawn to Instagram where images have borders/sepia/focus filters etc applied to them!?

In many cases I would say yes. We got clients that do it very well on Instagram, actually they get far more, and better quality traffic from Instagram than they do from Facebook. As with anything, it depends on your business of course. If your target audience is not on Instagram, there is probably little use for you to be there too.

Considering that Instagram doesn't have algorithms like Facebook has at the moment, platforms like Instagram and Tumblr are a great way to share content with your followers as they are more likely to see it. But like sociafly rightly points out, it is useful as long as your audience is there.
