What do people mean by "making money on youtube"?

Sorry for what may be a stupid question, but I'm trying to better understand when people say they're using youtube to make money.

Is it an indirect approach - that is, a youtube video to drive traffic to a site that then list builds/makes money? Or is it through advertising ON a youtube video?

    There are different ways to make money with YT and I guess what people mean is making money

    a) from clickable links on your videos which redirect viewers to a associated site like the blog or a squeeze page
    b) from links in the description where you can again redirect the viewers to your blog or a squeeze page or even an affiliate offer (but YT is getting more strict on this one)
    c) or from the ads which YT runs on your video before it starts

    You also can put up a video for an offline business and rank it on Google.

    I did this before and charged $297.

    Actually there are many ways. Your creativity is the limit. The first money I ever made on YouTube was by approaching users with popular videos and offering a percentage of commissions in exchange for putting my link in their video description. Not originally my idea, came across somewhere else, took quick action and made some money but never really pushed much.

    I think the most popular way to make money on YT is to get popular and sign a youtube partnership contract. If your videos reaches up to about several hundreds views you can make a really good money.

      I disagree with this.

      You don't make decent money in this way without a really popular channel that gets at least 10's of thousands of views per video.

      Most people doing this do not make any real money.

      However, for popular channels that get millions of views the money is significant. They are not IMers though.

        Hey Andy,

        In general, I agree. IMO a good formula to follow is to look for videos that:
        - have similar videos that get a lot of views for a variety of related keywords/topics
        - you can make a similar video yourself quickly and for free or cheap.

        Assuming you have videos with content of a decent quality, IMO the most effective way to get views to your own videos it to get them to appear as "suggested" videos on the pages of popular, related videos. IMers seem to only be interested in ranking, but source after source shows that Youtube sends more traffic through suggested videos than through search.

        Instead of always trying to optimize for high ranking, instead try to optimize so your related video appears on the page of a popular video as a suggested video.

        Other ways to make money is to use playlists and creative commons videos, which include videos made by others.

        Something I keep meaning to check out is using Adwords on Youtube. It looks like you can get clicks on Youtube for a fraction of what you'd pay for clicks from Google.

        You can embed Youtube videos on your own webpages and take advantage of the popularity of viral videos, then place your own ads and offers around these videos. Why post a link to a viral video in your Facebook stream, when you can take a few seconds and embed that same video on your own web page and send the traffic to your own page?

    IMers Create videos, optimizes tags,desc, and upload video,send some views,and then try to rank their video for selected keywords, this way they get targeted traffic, resulting in sales

    If you have a weird/rare/unique/WOW video , you can just upload it and make sure your YT account is old and has partner account enabled to serve ads via adsense.

    Once you do that,one or two shares , will get your video viral, and then you will seee money rolling in

    Becoming a partner is the best way to make money on YouTube. Basically, when you join the partnership system, you then display ads on your videos and earn money when anyone clicks the ads.
