Does squidoo still work?

Some years ago, Squidoo was touted as being very effective not just for promotions of your product or blog, but also as an effective linking strategy.

I have not seen many Squidoo Lenses these days. Are they still popular? Are they still good for getting the word out there so to speak?

I ask because someone recommended them to me for traffic generation.

Thank you.

I don't think there is much value in Squidoo anymore all the links are nofollow. From what I've seen the traffic from there has also been declining. Plus they will often times lock lenses for no apparent reason. I would say put that content on your own site.

Squidoo is toast. Not only squido, but hubpages, infobarrel and all the rest.

The rule is simple,,,, do not invest in any platform over which you do not have total control.

They can change their rules on the fly and ban your account,,, this rule is also valid for facebook, google plus etc.

Invest in your own site, where you pay the bills and where no one can delete your account

Personally I feel actively linking is a strategy that is well past it's sell by date. It probably still has some value, but gone are the days when so many strategies and internet marketing products were based entirely around it, and Squidoo was often one of the most popular.

However, if link building is a strategy you are committed to then Squidoo may be one of the best platforms still available for you.

Using Squidoo to build backlinks is an iffy strategy. If your primary goal is backlink building, then likely the content on the lens won't be very high quality, maybe consisting of spun content. And, that type of lens is sure to get deleted very quickly. Now, if you already have a highly rated lens that is popular and ranking well and want to add a link to another site you own on a similar subject, then that strategy might work out. But you have to start out with a popular Squidoo lens, not just build something new and think it will automatically pass some magic onto the page being linked to.

Link building as a strategy is finally past it's sell by date, which isn't a bad thing. Concentrate on targeted traffic and conversions, stuff that puts money in your bank.

Never been a big user of squidoo, but our site gets quite a bit of traffic from it from a few well written lenses. Forget nofollow links, and think targeted users who click those links and end up on your site.

If that same content was on your site, would you still generate the same targeted users? If the answer is yes, then ditch squidoo and any other content sites and as other posters have said, work on your own site.

If the answer is no, ie you get little traffic or are looking to increase it, then a few well curated content sites can work quite well as part of your marketing strategy. Just forget the SEO obsession of links and nofollow.

I didn't mention anything about writing iffy content. The content should be written exactly the same with the reader in mind regardless of where you post it. All I was suggesting is that Squidoo is still a good platform for your content regarding links back to your website.

Well one of my sites was hit be Google Penguin and in the message they mentioned the example of squidoo links as span links so since then I am staying away from it.

But, I think if you can write a genuine non-promotive blog and use the back link efficiently say via page URL or some long tail phrases which can prompt users to click or some general text like 'click here' etc Squidoo and Hubpages would still work for you.

At one time, you could earn very well with Squidoo. But then they started cracking down and deleting lenses right and left. Now, it would be rare for anything but a purely informational lense to stay up very long as promotional lenses usually get deleted fast for being spam.

Squidoo is trying to make it so that their pages are the final destination for visitors and all links leading off the site go to an affiliate program they are associated with or get a cut from or in some way would benefit them. If however, you have a very credible site that is directly related to what you are writing about there, then maybe you would have a possibility of using that site as an example in your article and getting some click throughs. Though more likely, people will just skim the link and move on.
