Alternative to Facebook

Hey Warriors,

I want to ask you if you are familiar with the US government illegally spying on it's own citizens (National Security Agency)? Supposedly Facebook gives all of your info to the NSA to spy on you according to Edward Snowden.

So my question I want to ask you all is, if I made a site similar to Facebook, but protect your info from being downloaded, do you think people would join my site? I haven't made a site but am considering making it. And I know I would rely on all Internet users to spread the word of my site. I don't have the money to advertise it. It would be all word of mouth.

If you want specifics please don't ask because I am still looking into developing this. Sorry.

So please give me your opinion. Thanks

No. Not trying to recreate it. But would be nice to have a competitor to it. I've looked and I don't see any real competitor to the site.

Thats for a reason. Youre certainly not the first person to come up with that idea. You've gotta come up with a different concept. Like pinterest or instagram or something. People love sharing photos. Thats for sure.

The people that failed, failed for on reason. They did not have a army of people promoting them. I understand that. I know I need tons of Internet marketers to help me. Right now I am only in the plans of the idea of doing this. So far I don't have a good plan for doing this. But I want to have multiple owners. People won't promote my site for no reason. They will expect to own part of the site to collect ad revenue.

As I said I am not really trying to recreate Facebook. I would need to be as rich as Bill Gates to do that. All I want to do is create an alternative for folks that choose to use my site. I would rely on people helping me spread the word.

Yes recreating Facebook is not a good idea at all. Yes you can make competitor of Facebook and try to get some traffic.

Trying to overthrow Facebook is next to impossible, but it doesn't mean you can't make a busy social media website. You had best get a great name, and a great idea.

I am sure http://vk.com/ does fine.

Even if you made 1/14949080495809485094584th facebooks market share they would just come in and buy you out anyway... or if you tried to get all Ron Swanson on them and turned down their offer, they would probably find a way to sue you in an ongoing case until your broke, which by the looks of your posts is already a reality, so why dont you just save yourself some legwork, have a coke & a smile and stfu

yeah tmrw i'm gonna start the main competitor to go up against McDonalds... gonna call it Pat Arnolds just to stir things up a bit and keep consumers on their toes...

people have known about the coersion between gov & fb data swapping and it has not even put a dent in their britches so my guess is that like every other major event in human history, absent some kind of armageddon style event, they arent moving their asses off fb anytime soon

    but seriously tho, good luck

Even if you were successful in competing with Facebook—not likely—the NSA would bully you into giving up the info.

If Facebook, Google and Microsoft couldn't resist, you won't be able to either.

Do you know if these sites were bullied or did they happily give up the info because these companies are evil?

Hey man, if you want to build the next Facebook by having an army of unpaid people promoting it, knock your socks off.

I would let people be part owners and receive ad money. Nobody is going to promote the site for free.

      Thats not real life Clark

Thats like saying humans are 'natural' or apart of nature - when we have clearly departed from that path long ago - if you really believe that just by thinking positively, you will reach your goal, then I invite you to go sit naked on a rock with no shelter in the wilderness, you will be amazed how food will fill your belly & clothes will cover your body all from just believing that you can do it, right?

if you can do something really different to facebook and g+ then I think security will be a big bonus. but sometimes, people dont really care their personal information at all, they know and they are still using it.

Security is extremely important. The mere fact that there is not really a alternative to Facebook forces people to use that site. As for G+ I don't know anyone who uses it. People are probably annoyed that Google forces everyone to have an account and most folks refuse to use their account.

So, people use Facebook because they have to?

I do agree with you about G+, though. The only reason people use that is to get bonus points with Google for organic search. Google sucks ass.

But, that said, if you hate Facebook so much, why are you promoting your page in your signature?

Well, nobody has to use Facebook, just like nobody has to use Google. It's more of a habit than anything for everyone.

I did try to use Facebook to promote several fanpages. Only to realize that Facebook then decided to hide content after I developed fanpages total of 20,000 fans. They have all of these stupid updates that worsen the site by hiding content from our fans. Simply we can't trust Facebook or any of these large sites. They are all for profit and don't care about the user experience.

Profit is great as probably everyone on Warrior Forum would agree. That's why we are here but that doesn't mean it's okay to destoy the user experience for anyone's website just to make more profit.

If you provide alternative platform to facebook
with better functionalities and a guarantee of users
    privacy,
then you have good chances but you would need
too many resources to make it successful.

Ok, so you are ambitious. But it really is not enough to say you will make something like FB, you should be more concrete. What added value will be there? Why people would change FB with your SN? Only privacy issues? I am not sure it is enough...

There are niches that have created something simmilar to facebook such as Spiritual Networks - Meet New People, Make Friends, Chat Online and they have quite a bit of users. Therefore it is possible but people wont just do it because of privacy issues since they are already desensitized to giving up their info
