Is this how Facebook cheats advertisers?

I happened to stumble upon this "Facebook Fraud" video by Veritasium today and I thought I could share it with the warriors here.

*Note that Veritasium is not an internet marketing channel but he's discussing about facebook frauds in this video.*

So what do you guys think about it?
#facebook #fraud

Lmao. But actually, I just browsed through my page likes and found only one possibly fake profile. The rest are all legit Facebook users. I even ran a small test to see the legitimacy of my likers. My fanpage is new (only about 75 likers) and promotes my eCommerce store. So I made a status offering the first 2 commenters an exclusive discount on the website. To my surprise, someone actually engaged the post and I am now giving them an exclusive discount. This may actually lead to my first sale now. I guess Facebook ads work differently for everyone.

I have no doubt there is truth to this, however if you are doing very narrow campaigns targeting small age groups and interests, I think you'll be ok.

That's nothing new, but I'm glad more people are complaining publicly. Ad networks simply don't have the ability to keep up with the innovative fraud that makes up literally half of their revenue, so they let it slide and hope that brand-based advertisers aren't tracking metrics well enough to notice (which they usually aren't, because almost everybody in the chain gets paid whether sales are generated through the ads or not). I bet Facebook wishes they could stop the fraudsters ruining their platform, but they can't at this point due to how complex the fraud is.

It's always been the dirty little secret of display advertising, and it's one reason ad networks like branding ads more than DR (not the only one obviously). If you're a direct response advertiser like most people here, all you can do is factor fraud into your budget and do your best to limit it through intelligent targeting and looking at different metrics (as in looking at profit alone, rather than clicks etc.).

    Well, crap!

I thought this would just be a whine-festival, until I watched the video.

I will need to rethink my FB advertising now.

I think what Ryan is saying is definitely true. Don't get all tangled up by the video. There are people that succeed in facebook and don't just stop your action after reading this and then there are some that don't. You just have to try it out yourself.

This video has been shared here several times before as well.

The fraud is not committed by Face Book but by Click firms but again as a advertiser it does affect our page likes, engagement and over all performance. I wish facebook would something about this issue and let the advertiser get the genuine fans.

Thanks for sharing this. I have only ever bought one Facebook Ad campaign and it didn't benefit my cause, I don't personally use Facebook and doubt I will buy any more advertisements after watching that video.

It just makes you wonder if Facebook continues to allow 'click farms' to click of those ads, wasting the advertisers money and not generating targeted page likes, so that the advertiser will buy more advertisements with Facebook in order to hopefully generate a more targeted like-base.

    Interesting subject!

I saw this a few months ago.

My one site has close to 7k followers. Despite ONLY targeting US and Australian residents, the vast majority are middle eastern, unresponsive, and likely fake. This led me to abandon Facebook marketing.

I never heard of anything like this before but all I know that a lot of people are very happy with Facebook and are using it for a long time.

I never used Facebook marketing and never plan to do so.
