How Many Years Do You Think Facebook Is Going To Last? Is it Declining?

I have a fanpage on FB and wanting to build it up, because it's in a good niche. I was reading somewhere that FB is on the decline because the youngsters don't want to be on the same network as their parents.. And they always want the cool new networks. What do you think? Do you think it's going to be around another 5-10 years?

Probably quite a long time... if not forever. That's like asking how long Google will be around. Unless either companies merges with another, I think they will be around forever. I could see Google actually buying out Facebook, though I think Facebook has become more powerful than Google so it could also go the other way.

Facebook is dead. The Internet is dead. Yeah, right!

Anyone who thinks Facebook is dead is probably trying to sell you a product about something other than Facebook.

Facebook is not dead and I don't see it going anywhere for a long time. Sure, the Facebook in 5 years from today will probably be very different but it will still be there in some form or another. Facebook have such a great platform because they are able to adapt with the times and changes that occur.

Was wondering if this was going to be, or turn into a "Facebook is Dead" thread

My wife, who up until recently didn't even go on the computer and just bought a laptop, goes to Facebook first thing.

        My wife is on Facebook.
        My daughter is on Facebook
Almost everybody I know is on Facebook.

I will probably die before Facebook dies.

      This probably...

Anybody using the word "forever" has no clue imo, the only constant in the world is change.

I surely think we as people can do better than facebook though...

The 'kids aren't on Facebook anymore' thing may be somewhat true, but its also an easy trend piece written by some journalist on a slow news day. When your grandparents are onto something - its probably going to be around for a while.

Really the answer depends on whether you're asking about, Facebook the company, Facebook the website, or Facebook the website that we all know and use now.

Facebook the company will clearly be around for years. IBM used to be a bigger player especially in home computing, but they've adapted their business strategy and are doing just fine. Just not in ways you would have predicted when they were founded in 1911 or even when they released their first PC in 1981. This is why Facebook is buying up companies like Instagram and Whatsapp.

Facebook the website will be around for years as well. Though as with any successful, I'm sure it'll continue to change and adapt as new technologies and competition emerge. If it doesn't it'll go the way of MySpace... (Incidentally, this constant need to adapt is why I think the idea of "passive" income is a load of hooey. But I digress...)

As for Facebook the website that we all know and use now? Well, it probably already changed somehow in the time I was writing this. And as I said above, it'll continue to do so. So if your business model is dependent on how Facebook operates right now, you're in a very risky situation. Their Edgerank algorithm is constantly changing. They can easily raise prices on ads. The list goes on and on... It doesn't mean Facebook isn't worth using, but you should definitely know your dependencies and try to mitigate your risk.

While Internet is an ever changing technology, it is hard to say how long Facebook will last.

I still remember those days Friendster is the must thing for everybody, and now it has gone nowhere.

Nevertheless, I think Facebook will last at least 5 years.
