There are more and more people who uses mobile phones when accessing their Facebook accounts and only a very little percentage of these people click links. I conducted a short survey on my blog and the result was shocking.

Out of 437 respondents who use phones to access their FB account through FB apps.

340 does not click a link
56 does not open internet on their phone
28 does not even know they can open Google on their phone
13 seldom click links or open links at home on their PC
_________
Total 437

No wonder why Facebook ads promoting outside links fails...

Yes, Facebook is being touted as the big goldmine for marketing - it is not. Certain markets at particular times seem to do well, but this set of mobile stats backs up what I have long suspected, online advertising in general is less effective than it once was. These SMS platforms seem to be the way forward, using mobile numbers instead of email. Requires further study, but FB is not the big solution people like to make out.

If they access fb via their phone they're online. So what do you mean "does not open internet"?

Opening an Internet on your phone and opening a website is totally different from just clicking a facebook icon (fb app). They are not aware that they are already opening the Internet because they only see Facebook and nothing else. Believe me, some people does not believe he has the Internet unless he sees Google.. lol..

Ah you meant the perception of the end user. You probably have a point there.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

  • You know what, Facebook is for socializing.

    Nobody goes shopping on Facebook.

The right hand side, where all the ads are, is unseen.

That is why FB ads are cheap.

    Nobody cares about the ads.

    Try Facebook group.

Just target ads to desktop and tablet. There is a ton of traffic.
People still use desktops in droves... Especially at work.

I agree right ads aren't great (in my niche at least), but the newsfeed ad works wonders. I drive 10,000 visitors per day from facebook ads so it works well and is profitable.

Just create ads that interest people and they'll click.

That sample size isn't big enough to draw any reliable conclusions.

You have to have a big enough dataset so that you can account for variance. You could have simply gotten very unlucky in this run.

Mobile traffic is increasing on all platforms, more so for social media sites like Facebook & Twitter.

Facebook does formats the Ad as per the smaller Mobile Screen though.

I'd say it really really depends on what you are selling. I can't comment on why your survey had those results, while another marketer may be making some good money on FB (and on mobile ads within it)

and YES Facebook is not for hard selling, it's for socializing and some brand awareness, but with that said many of us have created great CTR and great sales using the platform.

Like the others have said, I would chop out the side bar ads for now because I do agree that a major chunk of FB users are looking on mobile (and missing those ads completely). concentrate on newsfeed for desktop and mobile for now and test and tweak. make sure your ad is smart and engaging, not just another ad.

here is a side example: how many people actually watch the ads on YouTube? or do you hardly wait the 3 second countdown and hit SKIP! see, those advertisers are spending money displaying their traditional TV commercials Youtube (an online video platform). wrong context and the ad has very little effectiveness. a crap quality viral video has 10 million views while their professional ad gets little response. LOL

same here, create the ad within the right context (facebook for mobile) and make sure your image and text fits =)

That is a valid point but I think it depends of the nature of the links as well.
