Are you trying to connect with people just to sell them on your services? Is your introductory message all about you and how you can 'help' them? Or is it a way to start conversation and build a relationship?

Linkedin like other social media sites takes time, but it can be done successfully. Check out Linked University with Josh Turner.

Joining groups is a great first step. Picking the right groups is the most critical step. If you want to work local, pick local groups. If you want to work a niche, pick those groups. Once you join the group, then you can send messages to each individual member. You can send about 750 messages per day without getting flagged. Each message should begin with their name, say you are a group member, and offer a short value proposition that is valuable for them. This worked good for me until I did over 1,000 messages per day and got my account suspended. Got my account back with no problem!

Thank you to the 400+ warriors that chose to buy my Facebook WSO granting lifetime access to my Udemy course!

Do you know what kind of response rate you had for these messages? I'd be interested to see how it compares to just cold emailing.

Online networking is similar to offline networking. You find the right people (potential customers) by finding the right conversation (threads) at the right place (the groups). They'll more likely to read your message if you've interacted with them in groups.

It's like anything else: provide value and keep advertising subtle. Great advice in this thread.

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

Be careful though, as sometimes even once someone gets engaged with you in your sales process, if ever you get too helpful after they've expressed interest in your product, some idiots can accuse you of hard selling them. Yep, that's true I've seen that recently can you believe it? And that person even claimed to be an marketing "expert" somehow...

    Takes all kinds he?

    Good luck!

    Best regards,
