How Does Upworthy Work??

Hi there!

Does anybody now how 'Upworthy' and similar sites work? Is there an easy way to create 'viral style' blog such as this with a heavy focus on FB sharing, and joining mailing lists etc?

I thought it would Be Wordpress but seems not to be. Any guidance would be much appreciated! I'm trying to create a new 'community' style site like this that is HEAVILY integrated with FB and a FB page- with easy/ automated sharing of content etc.

Cheers!

Your website platform doesn't matter. You can do something similar with Wordpress.

The key is the images and headlines you post. Some of Upworthy's posts are duds while others garner thousands of shares.

I do something similar but it's niche specific which I like from a list building perspective. Also, I set everything up so it's profitable to also buy traffic, so organic facebook and search engine traffic is gravy.

Yes Upworthy gets a lot of traffic, but they are one Facebook change away from no traffic. By all means get free facebook traffic but develop other stable sources.

Upworthy should be a part of your overall strategy. If you start getting traction there, increase your post rate.

Not sure how you would use Upworthy. I looked at their FAQ but saw no way to submit content. There is a "Submit" link in their site map, but it leads to Tumblr. Am I missing something?

I can see how they would be useful though.

I agree that you shouldn't set up a site like this so that it depends on any one social network. That is never a good idea. It's getting to the point where you don't want to depend on any one traffic source, including Google.

I would focus on these four: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. Pinterest for Business is very useful, and people love to share infographics. No need to give Facebook more attention than it deserves.

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

  • To get content on Upworthy, you have contact their curators and pitch your content. You can try approaching them on Twitter or Facebook. And you have to keep in mind that there curators have their own "niches", so make sure you contact a curator that's in your niche.

And as to how they create viral content, it actually goes though a lot of testing. They regularly change the headlines and still images to see which combination works best.

If there's one flaw I can see with Upworthy is that they depend too much on Facebook for traffic. If you're going to use social media for traffic, it would be better to optimize across as many platforms as possible.
