Benefits of following/"liking" other pages?

Hello! This is my first post, and I've come across a question that I can't exactly Google for the answer. For business Twitter/Facebook/Tumblr pages. is there an obvious benefit to following or liking other pages?

So for instance, if I am a plumber from Alaska, would it be beneficial to follow the Alaskan Plumbers Association on Twitter or Facebook, or would it be a waste of time? Bonus points for anyone with legit statistics!

Thanks!

It's always good to be social.

Just don't fill your Twitter account with irrevelt followers.

You should always know who the influencers are in your niche, and you should follow, @mention and retweet them.

On Pinterest, you have to follow others in order to gain traction. Get on group boards and go wild.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there's any benefit to joining/liking a FB group. Unless maybe you intend to JV with them at some time and need to get their attention.

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

Yes, social networking sites are use as a tool to socialize/communicate with other people, whether it is personal or business purposes. In my opinion, liking pages and following people is the easiest way to connect and communicate to those that are relevant to your niche.
