Delete old social media posts?

I recently joined a company and will be taking over their social media sites: Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Previously they have outsourced these efforts and the firm they have been using has been posting pretty irrelevant content almost daily for the past few years. My company provides business software and related support, but it looks like whoever has been posting to their social media thought they should post anything "tech" related...from articles about calorie counting plates to pictures of Gameboys for "Throwback Thursday". As a result, they've had no engagement (likes, comments, etc) on any of their posts and their social media comes off as unprofessional and spammy. I'm wondering if part of my efforts should first involve cleaning out the "gunk" from all these old posts.

Should I take the time to delete irrelevant content? Would it help or hurt to start from scratch and just make new pages altogether? Are the effects of these actions different on Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn?

Thanks in advance!

  • I doubt visitors to the page will look further than a few posts on the page, so either delete the old posts or create new posts to fill up the timeline with relevant posts

Well the fact the page is established is a good thing, nerds can scroll back and see your company's been active in social media for years.

I recently had this issue with my facebook, scrolling through and cringing at all the stuff I used to post a few years ago. Ended up deleting most of the stupid stuff, preserving any decent content.
