Freelancer ads on your posts?

I don't know how long this has been going on. Contextual links are being placed on your posts without your consent or knowledge.

Is that a bad thing? To my way of thinking - yes. Why?

At the very least it is a deceptive practice. Since I've been posting to this forum (over ten years now) I have always made recommendations and given links based on what I know and what I have experienced and can recommend to others. I think I have built a good reputation for being helpful among the WF members.

Now, links are being placed in my posts (not by me) making it look like I'm suggesting something or recommending a particular product or service when I'm not. My name and content is being exploited to give credence (validity) to these ads. It's like I'm giving my thumbs up to the reader to check out this product (that they have linked to) in my own copy.

Here is an example: see Post#2 and the clickable word "escrow." I didn't do that linking. You'll notice throughout this thread, the word "escrow" is clickable and someone besides me is making money from the link.

I personally think that my own posts ought to be my suggestions, not Freelancer's attempt to make money off my name. Yes, they own the forum. But, personally, I don't want my own links confused with those that I didn't specifically put into my own post.

And yes, I realize this type of advertising as well as AdWords and all the rest appear on web sites that may post my content. But to me, this is different as others' ads have never been placed inside or "on" my personal posts that I am aware of here on the WF.

I have to agree, I don't mind ads being blasted everywhere, but if there is a link in my post that points somewhere, it gives the impression I endorse that website... If they start contextual linking to spammy wso's....

I agree with you. It did look like you were endorsing that other website and it obviously confused another reader too. I would guess this could be a big problem for Warrior Forum - possibly enough for people to find somewhere else to go. I think they need to stop the practice.

Looks like this is just for escrow.com (there's also a link to them in the footer). Could be because Freelancer's CEO, Matt Barrie, is now also the president of escrow.com. I don't know when that happened - I didn't see the announcement.

If it's just for the words escrow, then that fine, and 'freelancer" type terms.
I have no issues with that.

Yeah, as David's link shows, Freelancer and Escrow.com are now under the same ownership, so at least the links weren't for affiliate services. Still, using members' actual post content to promote their own site is still a little underhand. I'm glad it now looks like they've had a rethink.

**** NOTE: I do NOT recommend or endorse any links in this post other than those I specifically indicate by using a three-arrow symbol: >>>. Any other links are automatically generated by this website and are to be followed at your own risk.

So, I guess I'll have to preface all my posts with the above warning from now on.

As much as it might seem unfair and not really ethical , Freelance has every right to do this as this is their Property add Asset.

Yeah, I personally feel adding links to posts without consent is bullshit!

When I first got online and started fiddling around with writing, I signed up to Helium, because they had an ad share revenue system. I knew; they were putting links in my posts there, and also knew once you submitted an article it became their intellectual property.

After earning a whopping $13.50 (not even enough to get the min $25 payout) - I learned the definition of a content mill -they were banking off writers, and the writers were getting jacked! - Don't get me wrong they ran specific paying gigs for specific niche oriented writings and if your article was selected, you'd get paid... but, those offerings were minimal.

I totally disagree that this is appropriate behavior, whether they have the right or not... it's no wonder the number of registered users have dropped considerably, with news like this, it probably cost them a few more WF users considering other options.

Thanks SteveB I was unaware Freelancer was republishing posts with ad links...

PS- Maybe I should take the advice I was given, and make copy of all my posts, not that all of them are epic... but you never know, I may take deeper consideration to doing just that, having learned of this news.

Hey All, valid point about the appearance that you're unknowingly endorsing a website. This has now been reverted.

        HAIL - HAIL Steve!

Defines the measure of the word Warrior when one speaks up for all, and get things "reverted" - well done brother!

*NOTE: "Freelancer Admin" - Thanks for taking notice of the overall concerns of "all" warriors, as it was the admirable thing to do, to retain the integrity of this forum, and its users!

Impressed that there was a response so quickly from FL.

The links are very recent. I only know that because I suggested "escrow" in a thread last week and it wasn't linked at the time.

My own reaction yesterday was to go back and delete my post that had been linked.

What a shady practice. Their support team takes 3 days to reply to a question, but they have the time and energy to post affiliate links throughout everyone's posts?

I don't think it's deliberate - more a left hand/right hand thing going on. There seems to be an element/group/person looking at ways to monetize/advertise/grow numbers....and a different element/group/person trying to maintain quality, stop those gaming the systems, etc.

The resulting lack of consistency in enforcement of rules and policies can be confusing...but, then, I confuse easily.

"I recommend controlling the marketplace by only endorsing ads I want to endorse"...its a little extreme to control advertisements and setting up barriers to entry who may be competitors to your business

Did you have to run your article spinner software to do that, or is it simply a natural talent?
