This is something that I've just experienced on another forum. Put simply, someone thanked me for my post, as they found it highly valuable, and awarded me a "monetary reward". This means, instead of just a "thanks" that they send me some money to my Paypal account.

I just add my paypal account under my profile settings, and if other members find my input useful they reward me for it.

This could work here, and would probably improve the quality of the responses.

Thoughts?

I don't think it would work.

    1) You would now have people selling Warrior Forum 'thanks' on sites like fiverr and the like, just like they do now with Facebook 'likes'. It's too easily manipulated.

    2) You said it would improve the quality of responses but I'm not so sure about that. It would just mean more people posting useless stuff in the hope that someone gives them a thanks here or there.

Your signature is your 'thanks' for posting on the forum, right?

They're not thanks Will. You have to actually send payment. I'm not sure if this could be manipulated in any way, although I'm sure it might be possible. Besides, if people want to sell "thanks" as you say, they could be doing that right now.

Oh, I misunderstood what you were saying, sorry. I thought you meant people would earn WF points and then the forum pays out money when people reach a certain number.

Oh, so you kind of mean a 'buy me a beer' type setup? From a thread I read the other day it seems they once did have an option like that on this forum. I guess they removed it for some reason. Oh that's right, it was because people were coming through and harvesting the Paypal email addresses out of the forum.

If it could be done in a better way and more secure then cool... but by allowing people to pay one another it means people can come and find the Paypal email addresses for all those members...

Yeah, when the reinstatement of the "buy me a beer" option was discussed recently, it seems the main issues were whether a plugin existed for the vBulletin forum software and the threat (or likelihood) of PayPal addresses being harvested.

I don't think the risk of email addresses being harvested is really that bad... It would be something to educate newbies about, but I mean, in order to accept payments from people you need to give out your paypal address... Sure you might get phishing attempts but if you pay attention to what you're doing they are futile. DigitalPoint forums have paypal verification and their marketplace system which stores and verifies paypal accounts, mine has been registered there for a few years at least... Maybe look into what they are using?

I've been checking into getting the buy me a drink mod back up. We made that popular back in the day. That's how most WSO's were paid for in fact.

The only system out right now that works with vb leaves the email address exposed. I haven't had time to mess with it but will get around to it soon..

If Warrior Forum uses a content delivery network then they may be able to obfuscate all emails, I know that CloudFlare does it for free.

I'm not actually sure I would want to risk my Paypal account with something like that. Sounds a bit risky to me. Getting little payments to your account from random people. Sometimes people get their accounts limited for just being associated with accounts that have been limited or closed. This would make it easy for people to screw with you... if they wanted to.

99% of the time anything like that is from their automated system. If you're actually a legitimate business client you just phone them and they fix it right away, if they tell you something like they can't, escalate your call to a manager they are probably just new. I've had my account locked right up and been told I would never get it back, talking to management fixed that right away, and I helped them with the fight against the real criminal who added my paypal account to an ebay account without my permission just because I spoke with him about his business opportunity and demanding xyz to do business with him, which he couldn't provide obviously so I refused, but he added my paypal email anyways. Paypal thanked me for the help and apologized for the inconvenience. I still need to snail mail a complaint to Ebay since they don't require verifying the email address to add it to an ebay account, which is just plain stupid.

Yeah, I know they are pretty fair, I have dealt with them a lot. But I also know you want to minimize any reason Paypal would have to limit your account in the first place.

I'd love to have a "Tip Me" button. I think it's a great idea.
