Please disallow race based threads in the Off topic Forum

or for that matter anywhere else.

Nothing can be more divisive than people making observations about races. It brings more deep seated emotions than politics and even perhaps religion. Both those subjects are off limits according to the rules in the off topic forum and I would ask that race be also for the very same reason.

When you read threads where people are making statements like "blacks are the only race that ever riots", "blacks play the victim card" (as if you can lump everyone in a race together) along with "blacks this" and "whites this" its highly inflammatory and frankly the only reason there are not major blow outs in that section is because there are very few minorities on this forum.

It just makes the place seem very racist having people not only freely spew such things but seeing others back them up. I respectfully ask that you add race as a prohibited subject for the very same reason you have added religion and politics. I suppose it might take subjects like the Trayvon case off the table but I don't think anyone should care as if we do not hear enough about those cases elsewhere.

I see your point of view. I don't care for most race things, but I am glad there aren't blow outs.

    Mike,

That stuff is pretty rare in OT (or anywhere else on the board), but if you see it, PLEASE report it. We try to stomp on any of the "isms," but you know the limitations of that. If we don't know it's there...

As far as the percentages represented here, I don't know how anyone could make any definitive comments on that. So many people don't use avatars or real names, or use cartoons or other images that aren't them.

When you're talking about a global community like this, the concept of minorities becomes nearly meaningless anyway.

I doubt we'd put a rule in for this. Civilized people don't expect racist comments to be tolerated in public discussion. The rule about religion and politics is there because civilized people DO expect those discussions, and too many of our members refuse to conduct them in a respectful fashion.

It would be sort of like posting a rule saying "No death threats." Do we really need to say it in order for rational people to know it's not acceptable?

As much as i agree with you mike, i have yet to see any threads or post made on race. Not that i want to see. But i think people over here are sensible enough not to do it.

I'd like to disallow those who only post in the OT when they see something they disagree with - and then post in an effort to get a thread deleted.

Why aren't the offending posts removed, leaving the thread up, and the member(s) sent to detention?

    Joe,

Quite often, they are. Usually, in fact. You might be surprised to see how many posts just go *poof* there, with no mention or fanfare. Quite a few of the mods hang out in OT, although some rarely post.

Sometimes it's just clear that a thread isn't going to be allowed to get back into a civil mode without someone pushing things until they end up with a serious ban. In OT it's more appropriate, as I see it, to remind people about civility than to ban them for being passionate about the topics. It might help to keep in mind that "The Lounge" is the one and only PURE discussion section on this forum. As it is on many other forums.

If you spam OT, you'll get reported more, and faster, than in any other section. And we'll nuke an iffy account quicker there than anywhere else.
