In the dark and chaos my accountant brother Skip began to fold and pack their gear neatly in the canoe. That’s how he liked things done. My brother Mark was furiously flinging everything he could get his hands onto into a tangled heap in the canoe at panic speed.

Before they could get everything, the surging water pulled them off the sand bar and they clamored aboard the canoe. They were lucky - a lot of people on the river that night lost a lot more (luckily no one lost their life).
