How Welcome Emails Can Help Predict The Quality Of Your List

One of the most common practices email marketers take part in is sending welcoming emails to their new subscribers. One of the reasons why they do this is because it confirms that they have permission to email the new subscriber. It also sets expectations, as well as increase your chances of getting them to convert and become a customer.

Return Path performed a study and it took a look at the top 100 retailers' welcoming emails, and it showed that 75% of them sent welcome emails, and the ones who did not send one out ended up having a poor performance. Also, those who read the welcoming emails were likely to read future emails and likely to buy from those retailers. However, the ones who did not read were unlikely going to read any future emails. That is why welcome emails is covered in depth in the List Academy training guide.

The best time to reach new subscribers is via the welcome email, as this is the perfect time to get their attention. It can also improve a business's list, as they will know which email addresses they should remove. This right here is very useful for a business because eventually they can have a very high quality list.

As for the emails in the study, most of the emails were just welcoming the subscriber or thanking or confirming the subscription. Also, about a quarter of the emails offered some sort of promotion in the subject line. As for the response, the study revealed that the attention of the new subscriber was front/center for the brand.

Another thing that is worth mentioning is that welcome emails were more than two-times likely to get spam complaints than future promotional emails. For example, when welcome emails were sent out, it would reach the inbox 93 percent of the time, while future emails reached it 91 percent of the time. What this means is that the inbox placement rates were not affected, even though some of the welcome emails did end up getting marked as spam, so as you can see, the welcome email is extremely important and can be quite powerful. The good thing is that List Academy does give you plenty of examples on writing quality welcome emails.

There are many marketers who say that welcome emails should be sent out in order to increase chances of long term engagement, but the study actually found that those who took the time to open and read the welcome email were likely going to read any future messages that the brand sends out. The number of emails being read may have dropped, but it is worth pointing out that 180 days thereafter, future emails were being read at a 50 percent rate. However, people who didn't read the welcome email were probably not going to be reading any future emails.

1. Prediction The Future Value Of These Emails- As you can see from the above information, the chances of future emails being read were unlikely if the welcome email. This may leave you wondering if you should remove those subscribers due to the chance of the ISP filters to lead to delivering issues with the emails. Well, let's go over this briefly and provide you with some more information.

The truth is that ISPs usually do look at how much an email was read or not read and this plays a role in their decision to filter it, but it may still not be the best idea to remove the address. You should take a look at the e-receipts, as this can show you who didn't read the email. In matter of fact, subscribers who didn't read such emails may still be of some value, as the average that was spent as around $1,600 for the top brands and that was during the course of 180 days, so be sure to use some of the 'ninja' tactics covered in List Academy to 'spruce up' your list.

Some people may even use a second email account when they decide to purchase items online, as well as when they receive marketing messages, and this is why you might not want to remove subscribers. As for the retailers, the ones that sent a series of welcoming emails, they could determine the future value of the subscribers. If new subscribers read one email in the series, then the retailers could attain around 18 percent of future emails, while 2 emails being read increased the chances that they would get 40 percent, while 3 emails being read could possible achieve an average of 62 percent of future emails being read.

By now, you might be wondering what can be learnt from welcome emails, and the answer is quite a few things. This includes list quality, increased conversions and optimizing for revenue, all of which are covered in great detail in the List Academy email marketing course. Read on to find out more.

List Quality- Welcome emails are the best kind of email and the best thing about sending these emails out is that you can tell which readers are complaining, at least when you are using good software, so make sure you use good feedback loop software, as this will allow you to remove such readers. When you dot his, you will decrease your chances of running into issues with emails being delivered, so do your best to remove users who are complaining. By doing this, you will be a step closer to having a very high quality list.

2. Increased Conversions- Another reason why welcome emails are so good is because they can increase conversions. This email helps you establish a relationship early on. However, you want to find out which types of subject lines work the best and which ones grab the most attention, as this will increase your chances of getting better conversions, so it may take some time to figure out what works and what doesn't, but it is worth it. This is often times an overlooked area by even List Academy members as well, so be sure to pay special attention when Anik covers this section.

3. Optimizing For Revenue- You can optimize for revenue, as these types of emails can help you figure out and predict when subscribers will engage with emails you send out.
