By “cold” traffic, I mean visitors to your site who don't yet know you, don't have any reason to trust you yet, and who don't yet have any idea whether you're a genuine expert or a scam artist.

Now, assuming your product and sales letter are decent, and your visitors find your product relevant... you'll hopefully get some sales.
You might get a 1% conversion rate, or whatever is the “average” in your niche. In other words, for every 100 visitors, 1 person might buy.

Of course, you might get a little more... but I'm willing to bet it will be a long way from those RIDICULOUSLY HIGH conversion rates you hear some of the “guru” marketers achieving.

(They often boast of 3%... 5%... even 10% or more! And that's because they don't use Method #1.)

Now you might use a variation of this. Maybe you're using a “review page”. You rate the product highly, perhaps by comparison to other products, and then send the visitor through an affiliate link in the hope that they'll buy and earn you commission.

Cold Traffic ====>> Review Page ====>> Lukewarm Prospect ====>> Salespage

This can work, but there are also several downsides to this method:

1. If your main source of traffic to your review page comes from search engines, visitors probably don't know you, and therefore don't know how reliable your review is.

2. A review page doesn't stop visitors “shopping around” for more reviews, meaning they could end up buying through somebody else's affiliate link.

3. People are becoming increasingly aware that review pages are often created simply to make affiliate sales... so there may be a major trust gap, as visitors realize that you're not an entirely impartial reviewer.

METHOD #2: CAPTURE AND PITCH

This is better than Method #1, but still not ideal. However, it's what many marketers are doing today:

Cold Traffic ====>> Opt-in ====>> Email Pitches ====>> Warm Prospect ====>> Salespage

In other words, they send their visitors to a “squeeze page” that gets the visitor to hand over their email address, usually in exchange for a free report, video or some other free goodies.

Now, done right, this can increase sales, because it means you can follow up on the visitor by email, and increase your chances of selling to them at a later date.

BUT...

And here's the big

BUT...

A lot of marketers can't seem to resist the urge to send pitch after pitch after pitch...

...to the point where their subscribers suffer from what I call “pitch fatigue”.

In other words... they get sick of being pitched all the time, and either cancel their subscription... or just don't bother opening your emails any more.
