Most directories will approve the site and while the submission to all the directories take less than a day, it can take from just few days to couple of weeks depending on the directory for your site to get approved and for your link to get indexed. The purpose of this is to make it look natural to search engines so your site doesn't get blacklisted (You don't want to get your site sandboxed by google right? ). Only some directories will send you confirmation emails but most are auto submitted without you doing anything.
