Features of phpOStock

I have created this plugin so it should be really easy for anyone to set up and use but it also has a good deal of features to go with it including a range of FREE template listing styles. I have released the plugin in a Pro version and a lite version, the lite version is available completely FREE and the Pro version for a small price of $39. phpOStock Pro will allow you to list up to 50 items per page/post/sidebar widget in your Wordpress site using any of the following parameters to specify your listings:

- The item keywords (can be left blank to list whole categories plus negative keywords can also be used)
- The maximum number of items to display
- The store number
- The department number
- The category number
- The sub-category number
- The minimum price of the items that you wish to display
- The maximum price of the items that you wish to display

You can also display a range of information in the returned listings which is all controlled either by the code you place in your posts/pages/sidebar or by the global configuration screen in the admin section of your Wordpress site.

Thanks for your interest, myself and Alan both use phpBay on our affiliate sites.

To answer your question, it is totally possible to use the two together in one post/page. You simply write your page/post and add your phpBay code in where you want your eBay listings to show and your phpOStock code where you want Overstock.com listings to display.

Just to demonstrate this to you Alan has set up a quick page on his test site:

You can see you have phpBay listings at the top and phpOStock listings underneath. Obviously the listings don't match up fantastically but this is just a very quick mock up.

I am currently working on a complete showcase site which will have phpBay and phpOStock installed and I will post it here when it's complete.

Hi. For some reason I don't yet understand, I'm encountering diffiulty actually signing up with Overstock. I know they work throug Linkshare, but I'm unable to locate them within the Linkshare network. Still trying to work this out. I'm really looking forward to the plugin but need figure out what's is going on with Overstock and Linkshare.

All you need to do is go into the merchant list area and use the searchbox - I just did and they came right up - I just applied but since it's not automatic approval - I will wait until I hear back from them for approval before buying.

But this plug in looks terrific!

@Joseph: Yes you can. You can add anything you like to your page/post. I have written quite a powerful external templating system into the plugin. I am not sure if you are a phpBay Pro user, if so then you will have seen that the output of the data on your page is controlled by an external html template, that you have complete control over. I have taken that principle further, with the addition of multiple templates. You can specify different output templates as a parameter directly in the [phpostock] command line. Any template can also have its own CSS style sheet, so you can get pretty creative with them. I have a quick example of multiple templates in use on the same page on my test site at http://www.thecableguy.co.za/overstock-items-example-page

Overstock have also very recently added their own customer ratings and reviews on individual items to the API feed, and once I have established it is working well then I will be including that into this plugin as well.

I have placed the user manual for the phpOStock plugin online at http://www.phpostock.com/downloadz/phpOStock.pdf ... and that should give a very good idea of how and what it does.

Please do not hesitate to throw any other questions you may have in here though.

A quick tip regarding applying to Overstock program. They appear to having taken a similar approach as what EPN have, and look to be quite selective with the sites that are submitted for evaluation. My own personal suggestion is to submit a site of yours that is quite well content driven, and that is not just a thin affiliate site littered with eBay auctions.

It is a bit of a pain in the butt. What I did was go to the spot where you can get all the graphics creatives for the Overstock program, and you can see your Linkshare ID in the code snippets.

Alan's right, it is a pain in the butt . Okay let me try and explain it this way:

1) Go into your linkshare account by logging in
2) Click on the 'links' tab along the top of the screen
3) Click on the 'overstock.com' link which appears in this screen on the main page
4) On the left hand side of your overstock.com affiliate page you will see a menu where you can pick banners, email links, image links etc etc. Pick the one which says 'text/email' then click on any of the links which appear in that window and a new window should pop up.
5) In this new window you will have a big chunk of code which you paste in your site which looks something like this:

This would be my linkshare id: LNiea6k/cAw which is after ?id= and before &offerid.

I hope this makes sense, I may make a video of how to obtain this ID so it doesn't cause any further confusion.

Don't worry about it at all, the Linkshare ID is not the easiest thing to find and when we first started planning the product I found it hard to identify as well, they don't make it clear enough IMO.

Hi. I have been trying to add the phpostock widget to the side bar but have been running into a snag. when I click on the widget "add" button it gives me the "edit" button, but when I click "edit," nothing happens. It is as if the link is dead. Now, I can open the link in a new window or in an extra tab, but even so, it will still not let me add the widget to the side bar. (I'm using WP 2.6.3.) Any advice?

I just want to let people know that I am currently working on a showcase site for phpOStock Pro. The site build is very much ongoing but I wanted to show you it now so you could see how the listings can look when they are placed into a Wordpress site:

I am trying to build the site so you can see the different functions of the plugin in action.

On the home page I am calling the listings using a keyword, department number as well as defining the templates style I want to show. In addition I have specified to show items by price above $80.00. I have also specified that I only want to display the item title, price and thumbnail image.

If you click on one of the links toward the top of the page 'Quality Men's Watches' for example, you will see that the listings returned use a different template style. You can define the template style you want to use each time you place the phpostock code into your page/post. In addition I have used a negative keyword in this example to ensure that I get only men's watches. In addition I have also specified I want to show the product short description, if I wanted more product info I could also choose to show more product information such as the long description.

If you look to the sidebar you will see a 'shop by price' widget, here I have specified I want to return listings between a minimum price and a maximum price.

Again, looking at the sidebar you will also see the phpOStock widget in action.

Hope this helps you see what the plugin can do.

RE: Applying to the Overstock Affiliate Program

I have been in talks over the last few days with Overstock regarding their approval and rejection of affiliate applications and I just want to place an update in this thread, I will be posting one in our sales site as well shortly.

Basically if you are applying to the Overstock affiliate program for the first time then here are my recommendations on getting approved based on what I have discussed with the Overstock affiliate department.

1) Please ensure you have read or at least skimmed over their terms and conditions at Overstock.com Affiliate Program. A few important things to remember are that:

- They won't approve you if you live in New York due to tax laws
- They won't approve you if the site you submit has adult content on
- They won't approve you if you have a large amount of google advertising on the site.

2) Start building your site with the Overstock listings inside it using the phpOstock plugin, if you don't want to purchase phpOStock first as you are worried about getting approved then please just download our Lite (FREE) version from phpOstock.com. Basically the site you include in your application needs to have Overstock listings in and you should have place holders in the site somewhere so Overstock can get some idea of what its going to look like.

3) In your 'Other Details' please include that your site will be built using phpOStock from Ben & Alan at phpOStock.com.

I hope this helps everyone in filling in your Overstock applications, I'm sorry for the long post but I guessed it may make your lives a little easier.

Tough to say from this end. I know there have been some issues with this changeover from Linkshare to Commission Junction lately, and just after the announcement that they were moving the new application link was inactive.

If you application went through you should at least get a reply within 24/48 hours.

I have just added the email form onto the site where you can download phpOStock Lite. We were just a little bit later updating the free version but it's fully ready now.

I know it sounds silly to do it this way but obviously the problem we have is that Overstock can (like EPN) reject people and the recommendations I have laid out are ones detailed directly from Overstock's affiliate manager. The last thing we want to do is to sell you a plugin which you can't use which is why we recommend you use our phpOStock Lite plugin to get approved initially.

Just thinking over this..did you mean the FREE Templates for Wordpress or the 4 FREE layout styles which we give with phpOStock. If it's the 4 FREE layout styles then these will only work with phpOStock initially because they are coded specifically for Ostock but I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to modify them to work with phpBay.

Funny you should ask that actually, Brad has just finished integrating phpOStock with ReviewAZON in a similar way to how phpBay has been integrated. I believe he is due to release the updated version of ReviewAZON around this weekend.

We are also working to add additional features to the phpOStock plugin such as pagination, customer reviews and customer ratings. We will also be working on an API version for non- Wordpress sites.
