How do you manage your adswaps?

Hi Everyone,

I'm now at the point where I'll be entertaining adswaps. My list in the IM niche is now at 1400.

My question for you today is about how you manage your swaps. I know what the concept is and understand how it's done theoretically. But as I've not done swaps myself before, I have questions and concerns on some of the mechanics.

I think a how to guide would be a great tool for Warriors. Maybe someone who's been there done that can outline the proper ways to do this. Or, if there is already one, just point me to it in this post.

My questions are:

1: What tools are there to manage a swap? I have looked at safe-swapsDOTcom. Any others out there? Is this one good?

2: How do you "contract" with the other party? as in, who mails first, how do you insure the other party acts in good faith?

3: What research do you perform on the other party prior to agreeing on a swap?

4: How do you insure the material by the other party is congruent with your list and of high quality?

5: If you have a larger list than your partner, how do you work it out so you're both mailing to the same amount? Are there ways to automate your autoresponder or other tools so that I could randomly pick 300 addresses out of 1400?

6: What is the overall protocal to building swap relationships? There are always the right and wrong ways to ask for things. And every type of group has their own lingo. What are the best ways to do this working with other adswapers? I guess another way to ask this is for those who have larger lists and do this a lot, what's the WRONG way to talk to you?

I can probably think of a few more questions but these are the ones that are pressing to me at this point. Other questions from others welcome.

SafeSwaps is THE best tool I have found for managing ad swaps. And I built my income from zero to 6 figures in 18 months using ad swaps.

2: How do you "contract" with the other party? as in, who mails first, how do you insure the other party acts in good faith?
To ensure they email as well, I would sign up for their list first. This way, you should be able to tell if the email went out. I usually email simultaneously. SafeSwaps forces you to swap on the same day and tracks results.

Another idea is to use a tracking link so you can see how many people clicked on it. Or, if you swap affiliate links, you can tell by how many sales they generated in your system.

3: What research do you perform on the other party prior to agreeing on a swap?
Within SafeSwaps, you can see if their list is verified, what percentage of swaps they have done, their average clickthrough rate and the feedback from others who have swapped with them.

Outside of SafeSwaps (the way I originally did this), it is much harder. To determine if they were worth dealing with I looked at:
    - professionalness of their web site where their list was built
    - Alexa.com ranking (not perfect, but a reasonable indicator)

4: How do you insure the material by the other party is congruent with your list and of high quality?
If it is a free item, download it and review it. If a paid item, ask for a review copy.

5: If you have a larger list than your partner, how do you work it out so you're both mailing to the same amount? Are there ways to automate your autoresponder or other tools so that I could randomly pick 300 addresses out of 1400?
At the moment, I send to my whole list of 60K as long as the other person has at least 5k. We swap affiliate links so we both earn money on the swap. So the differential in lists isn't such a big deal as I am earning a commission as well.

6: What is the overall protocal to building swap relationships? There are always the right and wrong ways to ask for things. And every type of group has their own lingo. Firstly, stick with people who reach the same target audience as you so you don't burn out your list. Read their profile on SafeSwaps to see what kind of swaps they prefer. Stick to ones close to your list size while you build. The bigger your list size is and reputation on SafeSwaps, the more credibility you have when approaching others.

Good luck with adswaps. In my opinion they are the fastest and most powerful way to build your business.

I think ebusinesstutor has got it right on.

I'd only add that it's generally done in a fairly relaxed atmosphere - 'I'll mail for you, you mail for me' kind of thing where you just aim to get similar amounts of clicks to make it as fair as possible. Sometimes this may mean you send a followup email to get the clicks up - it improves your relationship for future ad swaps and JVs.

Yes, I liked safeswaps for the accountability factor as well.

I stopped as I took a break from swapping for awhile. Now I'm into it again.

      Yes all good advice.
Safe-Swaps will help you, no doubt, but it is a bit expensive if you want all the bells and wistles when you only have a small list.
Suggest you take the basic $9 a month package until you start to build up.

I'm interseted in an ad swap so i will pm you.

Safe-swap is pretty darn cool. Just signed up for it.

Here's a few questions on the usage of it.

Do you use the Safe Swap tracking link? It's an ugly link that they don't bother to try to hide. Is there a way to cloak it or do you have to suck it up and use it?

Do you generate the email right from their system or do you pull the person's copy into your own autoresponder?
