With 1600 Signed So Far We Have A Runaway Giveaway JV Train - Here's How We Did It

i thought the tactics we've been using for our latest self improvement
giveaway to attract JV partners might be of interest to anyone who has
run a giveaway and not managed to take away as many subscribers as they
would have liked. at the very least you'll learn how we expanded the
number of JVs on this one by a factor of 6 over the previous event.

right now we are gearing up for our latest event, the Self Improvement
Gifts 5 giveaway that launches on Jan 6, 2011. the sign up page for JVs
is found here:

Self Improvement Gifts 5 :: WELCOME!

i have described the event in more detail here:

http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...way-event.html

and with information about prizes here:

http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...one-catch.html

this is a collaboration between Stephanie Mulac, who has run this giveaway
for the last 5 years, and two partners that have joined her for the 2011
event: Dr. Joe Rubino (a self esteem expert), and Carolyn Hansen (a fitness
expert).

i have worked with Rubino and Hansen before on giveaways of this type,
and this is the first time i have worked with them and Stephanie on an
event.

as everyone who has done giveaways knows, it is the number and quality
of your JVs that primarily determines how many subscribers show up to
your event. so attracting them is vital.

at the moment we have almost 1600 JVs and still several days to go before
we open the doors. for the previous Rubino/Hansen event we drew 22K
new subscribers with 650 JVs. for the last Mulac event the number of
subscribers was around 10K for 300 JVs. obviously, this time we expect
the numbers to be much better and it is looking like we may hit 1800
JVs by launch day.

so what have we done differently this time that warrants an expansion
of the number of JV partners by a factor of perhaps 6 over the previous
SIG event only one year ago?

here are the main factors as i see them.

THE THINGS WE DID RIGHT

[0] this one is so obvious that i almost forgot to put in, hence the
zero numbering. collaboration between partners who have run similar
events in the past. pooling resources makes the job of promotion easier,
and nets more JVs and subscribers by the end of the day, even if you
don't do anything terribly new to attract attention to your event (which
you definitely should do).

[1] we are offering a solo mailout to around 170,000 self help subscribers
as the first prize for the traffic contest. a second JV chosen at random
from the top 30 on the leader board as gets mailout. plus we are offering
smaller second and third place mailouts too. the mailouts are a big
incentive, as we have NOT announced any physical prizes for this event
so far.

[2] we have a well-recognized expert in self esteem, Dr. Joe Rubino,
who has contacts with many other self improvement product vendors. so his
solicitation of JV partners helps a great deal. even so, with the last
event he participated in we drew only 650 JVs, but much better than the
300 Stephanie managed without a big name self help expert in the mix.

[3] Stephanie has worked with Scott Case to get Facebook integrated into
his giveaway application. so now we can encourage JVs to promote the
event to their Facebook friends by clicking on a simple Like button.
that also earns them 100 points toward ranking their gifts. we find
about 12 percent of the JVs do this. so that's a number that could
be seriously improved - though i don't yet have thoughts on how to
do that. but recruitment via the Like button has been greater than
via email, i believe.

[4] we have integrated Facebook into the user side too, and we will
be encouraging subscribers to Like aspects of the event. will this
work virally, expanding our final subscriber numbers significantly?
we don't know. but there is potential for it to work. JVs can see
that this is a possible success factor, and maybe encouraging them
to sign up.

[5] we put out a press release about the event, playing up the
Facebook angle, as that was the most unique thing about this event.
others have integrated Facebook for giveaways in the past, i hear,
but not to the extent that has been done here (so i am told). the
press release went out early December to give JVs time to come
across it.

[6] we opened our doors to JVs almost a full month before the
event was due to launch. so people have had plenty of time to
change their mind and decide to come aboard if they did not do
so when they first learned about it.

[7] we encouraged people on our existing JV lists to get on
board for the new event - several times. everyone does that,
of course, but the obvious tactics are important too.

[8] after the last event was over i contacted JVs and asked
them to let us know how well the event worked out for them.
from this we collected dozens of testimonials which we were
able to use to help bring new people on board this time.

[9] i told you guys about the event in this forum, this
being the third time. hey, i'm no dummy, i know that if i
can convince just a handful of you guys to participate then
our event could do very well. for most of these events it
is just a few heavy-hitter JVs who come on board and bring
the lion's share of the traffic, so JV quality plays a big
factor and i know some of you guys have the goods

maybe we did some other stuff too that helped, but if so it
escapes my mind at the moment. but we also screwed up somewhat
as well...

THE THINGS WE DID WRONG

[1] we did not put any tracking on our promotional efforts.
this means that despite bringing in a massive number of JVs
for this event, we really don't know how we managed to do
it. duh. we'll i've indicated the most likely factors above,
but it would have been nice to know for sure.

[2] we left the writing of the member OTO until late in the
game and then decided to completely change the offer. so that's
what i have been doing over the last week - devising an offer
that will appeal to both IM marketers and the general public.
not easy. we'll see how successful we are on opening day. but
the end result is not too shabby in my opinion

ok, the rights outweigh the wrongs at the moment, even though
i am sure we'll goof on something else before the day is over.
still things are looking good for this event at the moment.

if you want to join, you still can, but we open in just 3 days,
so you will need to hurry. here's the sign up page:
