You run an online marketing workshop for 50 business owners, and charge them each $50 per head to attend. That’ll bring you in $2,500 less say $200 for the hotel that hosts it, so $2,300 in your pocket.

Of the 50 business owners, 15 (30%) will then come back to you needing services afterwards. On average you’ll charge them $1,500 each. Assuming you do the work yourself that’ll bring in $22,500 in backend sales. If you outsource, you’ll obviously need to deduct whatever you pay the workers on Warrior/Elance etc. to calculate your profit.

You’ll also easily average $150/month backend passive income (auto-responder maintenance, local SEO maintenance etc.) from each of those businesses, so that’s $2,250 of recurring monthly income you have just created for yourself too.

Adding that up over a year, assuming you run just one online marketing workshop each month, you’ll bring in (($2,300 + $22,500) x 12 =) $297,000 of active income whilst building yourself a passive income stream of ($2,250 x 12 =) $27,000 per month. If you want a chance to enjoy the money you’ll outsource as much of the work as you can, but even if you give away half on that basis you’ll still have plenty left over to enjoy yourself.

And the really good thing is that these local business owners will be falling over themselves to get you to do all this work for them!

Because they have earlier paid you $50 for the privilege of sitting in front of you for 3 hours and paying you to establish yourself as the expert in these matters whilst attending your workshop.

Now let’s assume a lower 25% of them (it was 30% above) become clients afterwards: that’s 5 people each paying you $1,500 so another $7,500 back-end sales in total. So your active income from presenting the workshop and picking up the back-end sales will be $8,300. If you run just one workshop each month, that’s $99,600 before the year’s out.

Those same 5 business owners will also each give you on average $150 passive income each month, so $750 total per month. Multiply that by 12, and by the end of the year then you’ll also have built yourself a passive income stream of $9,000 per month too (in addition to your roughly $100,000 of active income).

Many thanks for your kind words: I've very pleased to see that I achieved my goal of over-delivering with my product

I'm in this business for real, 24x7, and what you have here is a genuine extract straight from my business model: no holds barred, and not not something especially written for a WSO...

With your conference room I'd advise that you phone around a half-dozen hotels with an idea of your proposed time and date, and see what they can offer. You'll most likely find that a few will tell you that one date & time is likely to be freer than another, and that they may be able to do you a better deal for it. Play them off against each other and you can do well: my best booking to date was £100 (roughly $150) for a whole morning, with them supplying pads, pens, tap water and even the projector screen (I have my own projector).

Just tell the delegates that it will be in a hotel in your-town, and that they'll get full details nearer the event.

But don't book the hotel room until you have at least enough delegates to make it worth your while: if you've picked a really quiet time and date then you really won't need to rush.

This way when you pay over your deposit/money to the hotel you can be sure that it'll be worth your while: i.e. you won't be presenting to an empty room.

I originally put these slides together for myself, to run my own workshops, then realised that I really should share this information with fellow offliners: we're working together, not in competition, after all!

I don't think I'm the world's best speaker either, but with the aid of the slides I've been able to stand up and do this several times. The audio was recorded live, and while the quality may not be the best it's audible and hopefully gives a few ideas on what to say.

I even surprised myself, but it wasn't too far into the presentation when I actually started to enjoy it! Seriously folks, with some practice at home first it's not that hard.

And you're right that there's more coming: I'm doing all this for myself anyway - not just for a WSO - so why wouldn't I want to share things as I go along? It's really no problem to send out the occasional update as I come up with it!

You're right that the workshops can be good for your pocket but, like you, I'm finding that all the backend business is keeping me very busy. On my list of things to do is investigate outsourcing a little more. Have you looked at this much?

Incidentally, and I don't know if you find this too, but I regularly attend various networking meetings, e.g. Chamber of Commerce breakfasts, and I do find that being able to say "I run a monthly marketing workshop, teaching people how to do this stuff themselves" is a brilliant way of separating myself from everybody else there who does 'web design' or whatever, and effectively puts me a whole level above them in terms of credibility.
