Some follow-up questions; how much time does one have to put in each site? (one time setup only, weekly search engine works etc?)

The challenge is for $1,000 cash. I'll be honest, it takes a bit of work, expect to put in 15 to 20 hours a week. How much time depends on how fast you are. After I build a site, I'll promote it some for the next 3 or 4 weeks, while I'm building other sites. I have to keep a detailed list of where I am with each site in order to keep everything straight.
