All I can say is WOW!

Any Warrior that wants to run a full-blown, all-in-one membership site had better jump all over this deal!

As someone who just bought a Membergate license a little over a month ago without any of the discounts or bonuses, I can't rave enough about Membergate or Tim and his support team.

My wife and I are starting a membership site (Momprenaire.com) and have had a ton of question along the way, and Tim and his staff have always answered very quickly, and at all hours of the day. Many times they'd make changes/tweaks for us, then respond back with the step-by-step solution in case we ran into the issue again.

Hello Instructor,

First of all, I can understand where you are coming from as there are an overwhelming amount of choices out on the market. Thank you for giving me the chance to address some common questions in regards to that.


A disclaimer before I start: I am friends with Stu McLaren (one of the founders of Wishlist Member). He's a great guy. I don't know WLM intimately. I do know we have some former WLM customers (and aMember as well as plenty of other solutions) who are using MemberGate now. That's not to say that they wouldn't have satisfied customers as well I'm sure.


When it comes to full featured, "turn key" systems, MemberGate is the name you will continuously hear as the standard.

Its important to realize that MemberGate goes far beyond a WordPress blog with a script applied to it.

MemberGate has completely been programmed from day one as a membership site solution. Into the 10th year now and somewhere around 10,000 programming hours have made it a very robust, proven solution with only one goal in mind: to be a top notch membership site solution.


Generally feedback we hear from someone moving up to MemberGate from script based solutions include complaints about the former solutions including:


- Scalability - the solution started grinding to a halt as their membership grew. I touched on this a bit in the WSO posted above. MemberGate has been proven rock solid with sites with 300,000+ members on board while others can get bogged down with a few thousand or even in some cases a few hundred members on board. There are factors that contribute to scalability issues and they often boil down to the amount of database accesses needed to make a membership site function. MemberGate has always taken that into account during the programming cycle.


- Missing functionality or poorly integrated functionality such as:
* no affiliate program (or the need to pay extra monthly to a 3rd partyaffiliate program provider).
* weak (or no) discussion forum option
* no profiles, classified ads, resource directory

- Poorly handled membership management. Everything is handled automatically with MemberGate. There is no involvement AT ALL. Signups, cancellations, automatic rebilling, password requests are all handled without needing the webmaster's involvement.

- Very weak (or completely missing) reporting. In some cases you can't see who many customers aredo to renew, information about cancellations, lack of data on how people are arriving at your site, what they are searching for or other vital marketing information.

- Integration with outside programs can be kludgy at best. Typically an add on module is not fully integrated to talk with other areas of the site. The result is that information is not passed as seamlessly as expected (or at all). Its understandable as they aren't designed from the ground up within the script but instead are bolted
on as best as possible.

- No way of trying to recovered declined credit card transactions. MemberGate on the other hand has proprietary methods of increasing your member retention through some automatic methods.


Speaking of credit cards, another BIG factor to keep in mind:


Hopefully you are thinking about your exit strategy (yes even at the beginning). You will want to consider whether the platform you are considering allows direct integration to a payment gateway. If you are only relying on a 3rd party (such as Paypal) then when it comes to selling your site, you can be faced
with a very strong dilemma.

If all of your members are in Paypal, then the new owner is in a very uncomfortable position of how to get those customers to continue to be billed. Paypal won't transfer that information to another Paypal account and even bribing the heck out of your membership to renew (for the new owner) is going to heavily impact the amount of active members on the site.

That is not an appealing prospect for a potential buyer of your site when the time comes.



The fact that the site is set up and professionally designed with custom graphics is another appealing factor. Instead of trying to get various plugins or scripts to play nicely together, you can get to work immediately on filling your site and getting the income streaming in.


The best advice I can give is to join multiple sites using the solutions that you are considering. That will give you the best idea from the customer's perspective as far as the flow and features of a site. MemberGate tends to attract clients who have really done a lot of due diligence prior to coming on board. We realize that the investment is higher than many script solutions but between the feature set, support (a real biggie) and proven nature of the software is what converts them over.

For what its worth, larger corporate clients have a problem with our price as well. They consider it too inexpensive to be taken seriously.

We've heard that several times (and offered to bump things up by a factor of 10x if they wanted ;-) - that was one of the biggest sticking points with General Motors. We were too inexpensive and some of the solutions we were up against quoted prices of 5 to 15x our price. They also quoted development time of up to 9 months. We had a working version to show them when we presented. They went with MemberGate despite their initial misgivings of it being "too cheap"

Like I said, not a huge deal. If someone gets to 1,000 paid members, I'm sure they would be glad to upgrade to either standard or enterprise. Just thought it would be good to clarify.



Also, it's been a couple of years (I think Bill was still running Membergate then) since I've looked into MG. Do you have the capabilities to 'dripfeed' content based on the amount of time someone's been an active member?

Typically once a site is at that level it is chugging along quite nicely in the tens of thousands per month (or more).

I used to use it on my Membership Site Owner Tips and Strategies Profitable Member sites and Subscription Web sites site - after doing some testing, the $1 trial actually turned out better in my case. (Your mileage may vary).

I tracked the retention and conversion which revealed to me that for my site, while it may have had a slight decline in signups, it had a stronger stick rate and was worth going the $1 route. Obviously something to test!

The demo is being updated right now as one of the final steps prior to relaunching our site. The forum you see on there is an older style. If you take a look at this page, it has a glimpse at the newer forum style:

Hi Suzanne,

Keep in mind that if Paypal or Clickbank is taking payments right now, then their account is already set up and running in that service. If you have a list of members that are active in one of those services, you can
get them imported into the site.

The challenge is that being an existing customer then the MemberGate site will need to be updated manually to cancel those members if they cancel or get declined.

In the past other clients have imported existing members and set their renewal date to far out in the future. They are continue to bill on Paypal (or Clickbank) and when they fail then they are manually turned inactive (can be done with a few clicks).

Probably the best bet for you, Jeffery and Ken would be to give our support line a call so we can clarify any remaining tech issues with you. The U.S. number is: 1-617-848-9619

Jeffery, a forum import can be a bear of a challenge (never mind two of them - We have some sites that have connected their site to an existing vBulletin board on their own. I can put you in touch with them if you wanted to see what was involved or possible have their tech person to do it for you. Its not something we would handle on our end though but it has been possible in the past.

The server environment is:

Windows 2003
MSSQL and MySQL support
PHP capable, Zen enabled
Plesk control panel

I think the main thing that is making us think twice about this is the Windows hosting...instead of Linux. - We have no doubt that it would run MG just fine, but we were looking to get rid of our dedicated server....and that would mean we'd have to have a place to run a lot of Linux based software that we currently have on our server.

Membergate is not for everyone. But - if you are looking to build an actual business using a membership site, this is the one to get.

Putting together a bunch of scripts, plug-ins, etc can work for a short term, WSO, quick site for a couple hundred members. But if you want full features, full support, and constantly stay up with new technologies, then MemberGate is a great solution.

I highly recommend it.

I see you are living in the U.S. so the processor I recommend is Authorize.net. We have very good connections with PowerPay as an Authorize.net processor.

I'm not a member of membergate but i wish i had used the memebrgate software for one of my membership sites.

The problems with other options are highlighted well by Tim in his post #5.

For a membership site i used memberspeed.com - this was probably the most annoying software that i've ever used.

I am a member of offlinebiz.com that use the membergate software. Just by being a member there i can see the benefits of using membergate for your membership sites.

Tim, I'm sorry to pull this thread up after it has been off the air for quite some time.

However, MemberGate seems extremely interesting to me. What I want to know is - Does it have all the capabilities of LinkedIn? I'm planning to run a membership site where the target members would be business owners and senior management professionals + entrepreneurs-to-be. It's going to be a paid site so I'm not looking at millions of members. 10,000 members, at best. I'm sure MemberGate can handle load like that - Please confirm .

The members will be doing a lot of video/slide-show interactions (Multi-speaker Webinars, if you will) and a lot of file sharing internally - something like WebEx, perhaps. They'll be doing collaboration on projects as well - something like Basecamp. How does MemberGate fare for such usage?

Security is another main concern I have. Please shed some light on the same.
